Hi all,

i use windowmaker as windowmanager and just installed skype. Skype works fine execpt for a sound problem.
As far as i can see a sound daemon is required (arts or esd). I installed and started artsd but skype still can't use my sound device.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Daniel

No, Skype doesn't need a soundserver, but Skype needs OSS. Have you compiled ALSA with OSS Support?

I use the alsa-driver package:

Code:

deathstar linux # equery u alsa-driver
[ Searching for packages matching alsa-driver... ]
[ Colour Code : set unset ]
[ Legend        : Left column  (U) - USE flags from make.conf                     ]
[                  : Right column (I) - USE flags packages was installed with ]
[ Found these USE variables for media-sound/alsa-driver-1.0.10-r2 ]
 U I
 - - debug : Tells configure and the makefiles to build for debugging. Effects vary across packages, but generally it will at least add -g to CFLAGS. Remember to set FEATURES=nostrip too
 - - doc   : Adds extra documentation (API, Javadoc, etc)
 + + oss   : Adds support for OSS (Open Sound System)

I compiled the drivers to offer OSS support

So did you emerge alsa-oss, too?
And what exactly is your problem in skype? Any Errors?
Can you use OSS with XMMS for example?

Execpt for one error, all errors disappeared after installing alsa-oss. The error that still shows up is the following:

Code:

$ skype
No running artsd or esd found
Starting skype without sound daemon
==========================================

Well this is normal behaviour unfortunately. Only one application can output sound to /dev/dsp :(

This can't be normal behaviour cause i can listen to mp3's und watch a video and get the sound of both together. This doesn't actually make sense but it works

Yes, but this is only possible if these application support soundoutput to alsa and skype uses OSS. If you look into the skype forums all people complain about this... Hopefully the next skype release will support alsa...

btw: what soundcard are you using?
