Hi all!

I've been reading this thread from the first message to the last and I still can't get dri to work properly :(
I get X to run and all that, but no dri :(

You just had to look at the second post on page 10...

Now there's a way to get DRI work with Intel Sonoma (i.e. i915): https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-364512-highlight-.html .

This doesn't seem to work with the current version: xorg-x11-6.8.99.15-r4.ebuild
i emerged sync yesterday and have no xorg-x11-6.8.99.15
when i try to apply the patch there anyway, X freezes on startup.
I've recompiled xorg so many times now i'm about to throw the computer out of the window.
i have /dev/dri/card0 up and all that but no direct render in glxinfo. + slow fps :(

It should. I have successfully applied the patch on my laptop, which runs xorg 6.8.99.15-r4. I got the same increase ratio as before: from 800 FPS to 1300 FPS.

What do you mean with that? Versions 6.8.99.xxx are masked (with ~arch and with package.mask).
Also note that xorg-drm from portage does apply only to ATI cards. You don't need that.

Xorg freezes have been largely discussed too in this forum. You should find useful info by searching xorg+freeze+i915.

Since i915 support is included in recent kernels drm is enabled; so having the node you indicated is expected. The lnx_agp patch does force Xorg to use it properly.

And one last thing that has to be often repeated: don't use DRI snapshots. ;)

Again:

--- 1. Please: don't use DRI snapshots with i915 ---
--- 2. Please: read before posting! ---

Could you post an excerpt of /var/log/Xorg.0.log where those error messages appear? For example you can post the results of the following command:
Code:
grep -C 5 "(EE)" /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Xorg is not able to detect your mouse.
Edit the file and correct the Device.

Your xorg.conf file is /root/xorg.conf.new

To test the server, run 'X -config /root/xorg.conf.new'

From your previous post only the first and last few lines are useful.

Which means your using Xorg 6.8.2 (r4?) but you didn't specify which release. You're using Gentoo Sources 2.6.13-r5 appearently.

The end of your Xorg log file says:

Your xorg.conf file is /root/xorg.conf.new

Xorg was not able to detect your mouse. This is probably because you didn't enable mouse support in your kernel or because the appropriate module was not loaded. Reasons why the module was not loaded can be
  1. You didn't emerge coldplug/hotplug
  2. You didn't add mouse support in your kernel (are you using PS2 or USB mouse?)
  3. You didn't put the module name in /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6
  4. You didn't add coldplug to the default runlevel
  5. The "Device" option in your Xorg's config InputDevice section is wrong or missing.

Did you run X -config /root/xorg.conf.new? If yes, did you have an error message? If yes what was the error message exactly?
You said you followed Gentoo Handbook but it failed.
  1. What were the exact steps that you followed?
  2. What were the instructions you typed and what service/command/step exactly failed?
  3. What desktop environment do you want exactly? Gnome? KDE? Fluxbox? Enlightenment? XFCE4?...

If you want accurate help, please, provide a detailed explanation on what you have and what you want too.

Fine. Would you mind shortening a bit your post with Xorg's log and leave only the relevant parts? Enclose it also in [code] brackets. Thanks.

Hi,

I don't know how you guys did it, but I'm still having problems getting my intel 915GM videocard to work with xorg.
What I did is as follows:

Installed xorg-6.8.2
Installed the dri-snapshots
Put the Driver "i810" in xorg.conf

but still xorg complains about:

Code:
"(WW) I810: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:0:2:1) found
(EE) No devices detected.

And I don't find any way to make it work :/

Some more info you might need to help me:

- The module i915 is loaded without problems
- The dmesg output about agpgart is as follows:
Code:
Linux agpgart interface v0.101 (c) Dave Jones
agpgart: Detected an Intel 915GM Chipset.
agpgart: Detected 16124K stolen memory.
agpgart: AGP aperture is 256M @ 0xd0000000

- Then the output of dmesg | grep drm (don't know if you need this, just to be a bit verbose)
Code:
[drm] Initialized drm 1.0.1 20051102
[drm:fill_in_dev] *ERROR Cannot initialize the agpgart module.
DRM: drm_get_dev failed.

Note: this is before modprobe'ing i915, here is the output after:
Code:

[drm] Initialized i915 1.2.0 20041217 on minor 0:
[drm] Used old pci detect: framebuffer loaded

- So that leads us to the output of lspci:
Code:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Expess GRaphics Controller (rev 04)
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller (rev 04)

- And last but not least, some relevant xorg.conf details:
Code:

Section "Device"
      Identifier "My Video Card"
      Driver      "i810"
EndSection

I've tried specifying the BusID to PCI:0:2:0, but xorg still complains about device on PCI:0:2:1, if I change BusID to PCI:0:3:0, he seems to check both 0:2:0 and 0:2:1, but they both fail with the no Devices found error.

I hope someone will be able to help, if more info is needed, just ask (as there's a good chance I have forgotten something).

Glad I could help. As seppelrockt explained in another thread, switching to Xorg 7.0 might simply solve everything (DRI with i915 support).

Well, I can understand reading a long thread is a bit boring but there are posts no further than the top of this page that explain not to use DRI snapshots and to migrate to xorg 6.8.99.15. Please read and/or search before you post. There are so many places where people who have tried DRI snapshots advise *not* to use them with i915. Just go to the search page and type "i915 dri snapshots", for an overview.

Yeah, well, normally I try to read everything as much as possible, in this case my time was a bit limited so I apparently didn't see that post of yours about not using the dri snapshots. Problem is my search query (intel 915GM xorg) on the forums brought up a lot of threads with lots of different info that conflicted in one way or another with each other so I was a bit overwhelmed with info and didn't really know what to believe.

But ok, I shall do as suggested now.

Thanks for the help (you edited that one post so the DRI-thing is in a bigger font now, didn't you? :p).

You can display results as posts not as topics to get directly to the messages of interrest. Keyword for Intel 915 here is i915.

Yup. But don't worry, I have to do that regularly as the thread grows ;)

No?
Code:
nelchael@nelchael ~$ glxinfo | head -n 3
name of display: :0.0
display: :0  screen: 0
direct rendering: Yes
nelchael@nelchael ~$

So what does "direct rendering: Yes" mean?

Well, as per your document it doesn't hit in the face... I was looking at the figure. About 800 FPS is what we get when DRI is *not* enabled :) . After the patch it gets to almost 1300. Would ASUS implement i915 in a different manner than Dell?

I get over 1300 FPS in 16 bit color, in 24 (which I need more than speed) I get ~800.
