I have seen several complaints about this chipset and I was wondering how others have faired. I know you will not get a lot of posts praising how well a card does so the results are probably skewed a bit. The whole reason I am asking is that I need to buy a 4 channel card at NewEgg.com and the Silicon Image Card costs ~ $25 while the Promise card costs over $60.

I have an onboard SiI3112A and a blacklisted Seagate harddrive, but I still get write speeds of around 140 MB/sec, whereas an affect harddrive should be getting like 20. I don't know enough about the issue, but I'm fairly certain that if you are using newer harddrives you shouldn't run into any problems.

Edit: After having looked into the issue more: My write speeds are really more like 60 mb/sec, and I did end up having to take myself off the blacklist by modifying a file in the kernel sources. So far, I have had no problems. It seems to be the case that only very old (relatively) 3112 controllers have this problem. Newer controllers should fare fine. If you end up getting a 3112 and your kernel blacklists your harddrive, PM me and I'll tell you how to fix it. To check if you're blacklisted, run
Code:

dmesg | grep errata

If you get something about a SiI errata fix, then you're blacklisted.

Thanks. I guess I'll give the Silicon Image card a try.
