minicom

minicom isnt working correctly on my gentoo install. this is on a sony viao laptop that previously has had suse 7.3 and redhat 7.1 on it along with win2k. using minicom (or hyperterm in the win2k case) on all those installs worked fine but with gentoo its not happening. i can connect to the serial port and issue commands but its SLOWWWWWWWW. im using the same minicom configs i've always used. just wondering if anyone else had experiecnced this?
