PostPosted: Sat Jan 11, 2003 3:15 pm    Post subject: Can't emerge XFree 4.2.99 - "message digests do not mat Reply with quote

I'm trying to install xfree 4.2.99.3, like so
Code:

root@tal robt # ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge  /usr/portage/x11-base/xfree/xfree-4.2.99.3-r1.ebuild

I get this:
Code:

!!! X4.2.99.3-2.tar.bz2: message digests do not match!
!!! X4.2.99.3-2.tar.bz2 is corrupt or incomplete.
>>> our recorded digest: a70af970c95a9ec30365bc8ac8fb663f
>>>  your file's digest: 8b797ad7edf70b16982be69a45c268e2
>>> Please delete /usr/portage/distfiles/X4.2.99.3-2.tar.bz2 and refetch.

However when I delete this file and try again, i get the same message.

At this point I'm a bit worried that stuff is half installed and that my current xfree 4.2 won't work right anymore, though I haven't tried it. But I still want to install 4.2.99 - any advice?[/code]

No need to worry, there's nothing installed yet. For installing, choose one of these:
Ask the maintainer to fix the digest or
    do
    Code:
    ebuild /usr/portage/x11-base/xfree/xfree-4.2.99.3-r1.ebuild digest

This is quick and dirty, and thus not recommended.

Thanks, I just reported the bug, but I will probably do the other thing too just to get going...

Code:
ebuild /usr/portage/x11-base/xfree/xfree-4.2.99.3-r1.ebuild digest

Doesn't work for me, portage now complains about patches it can not apply

Does XFree-4.2.99 fix the font problems that are in 4.2.1?

BTW, guys, the release date for XFree 4.3 is supposedly 22 January. I don't know how soon after that it's reasonable to expect an ebuild....

This is strange.
The 4.2.99-r1 ebuild is dated Jan 3 and the files are also dated the same.

I just emerge 4.2.99 last week and did not have any problems as you described.

Are you sure you deleted all the files from your /usr/portage/distfiles directory?

I just did an md5sum on the same file as you listed above and my checksum is identical to the ones expected.

I suspedt that you:
a) Downloaded the files in ascii mode rather than in binary mode
b) Had some network issues and the files got corrupted.

I suggest that you go to ftp.ibiblio.org and donwload each file manually. The build and the files are ok.

I had the digest problem to. But fixed it with "ebuild xxx digest". And then I get the patch error. I get the same error on both my laptop and my stationary :( Even though I had 4.2.99 on my laptop earlier but accidentally downgraded it

Code:

Hey guys,

I am having the same issues. Two things to add:

1) I have tried getting the file from 3 different mirrors. They all have the same MD5 hash and they are all wrong.

2) XFree CVS is required for anyone who wants to build gnome2.1.x.

so does anyone still have a copy of the xfree-4.2.99-3-r0 hanging arounf?

I just re-downloaded the files from ftp.ibiblio.org and did a diff against the ones I have in my /usr/portage/distfiles directory which I built my 4.2.99 from and they match.

Here is what I did:
1. Go to ftp://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo/distfiles/

2. Download the files maually and place them in /usr/portage/distfiles

This should work unless you use a browser that defaults to ASCII download and not BINARY.

The files on ftp.ibilio.org is OK and is not corrupt.

I think the reason you guys are having digest problems is because the Xfree snapshot has been updated, but the ebuild hasnt been given a new revision number. when you try to update xfree, emerge sees that the source files are not big enough so it tries to append the data at the end of the new snapshot to the end of your local copy of the old snapshot.

just a theory,
sa

No, I don't think so.
The md5sum that their ebuild expects is the same as the md5sum I get on my files and the files I downloaded today from ftp.ibilio.org and the files I used to install 4.2.99 last week.

The files, the ebuild, the digest are all ok. This is a problem with your downloads folks.

I just (as of 4am this morning) attempted this ebuild, and got the md5 error. I followed the instructions to ftp (manually) the files, and had zero problems. My problem comes in the fact that after verifying I was transferring in binary, I still get:

Code:
8b797ad7edf70b16982be69a45c268e2  X4.2.99.3-2.tar.bz2

for my md5sum.

Anyone got any ideas?

I tried your suggestion ebrostig, to download manually. But I get the exact same error. I used gftp with binary :(

Interesting.

I just re-downloaded X4.2.99.3-2.tar.bz2 and got a different md5sum on this file from the one I already had.
Something fishy is going on with ftp.ibiblio.org.
See xfree 4.2.99.3 md5 sum for the md5sums of my old copy and the new copy of the file.

Hi!
You can get the older (but working) xfree sources from this mirror:

ftp://ftp.rez-gif.supelec.fr/pub/Linux/distrib/gentoo/distfiles

Ok updated theory...

, If you had the 4.2.99.3 source files from before 21 Dec 2002 in /usr/portage/distfiles, and then tried to emerge xfree-4.2.99.3 after 21 Dec 2002, this is when you have have problems.
Code:

*xfree-4.2.99.3 (13 Nov 2002)

  21 Dec 2002; Seemant Kulleen <seemant@gentoo.org> :
updated snapshot again -- sis fixes.  andee and lanalyst in #gentoo were
invaluable for this ebuild, which is a lot better than before.  Many many
many many many thanks to them :)

so what im saying is, if you have the old sources from before dec 21, delete them and them re-emerge...

hth,
sa

Nope. I have a *brand new* box. It still has that new "live-cd" smell. I started the install on Monday, and am getting held up by this. I'm running regular xfree (4.2.1ish) at home, so I know that works... :)

Got portage snapshot from 20030114 and downloaded the files (again /sigh) today. No dice. I'm gonna grab the files off that ftp server that was dug up. Hopefully it'll work... :)
