The topic show the problem.
after an emerge -u xorg-x11,

launching X (Xorg) in any way give me a segmentation fault while loading the
libvbe.a module in /usr/X11R6/lib/modules.

Also Xorg -configure or Xorg -probeonly will segfault loading it.

My solution was to remove libvbe.a

but: what is libvbe.a ?
what is used for?

how can i rebuild it ? how can be recompiled ?

what package is part of ?

Hi,

It's part of the xorg-x11 package. It's easy to find out what file belongs to what package by using equery (part of gentoolkit):
Code:

 # equery b /usr/lib/modules/libvbe.a
[ Searching for file(s) /usr/lib/modules/libvbe.a in *... ]
x11-base/xorg-x11-6.8.2-r2 (/usr/lib/modules/libvbe.a)

I believe that the vbe module is VESA BIOS Extensions which have something to do with detecting your monitor's capabilities or something. This problem has been linked to glibc-2.3.5 in the past, though I've not experienced it myself.

Cheers,
James

I had the same issue. Moving libvbe.a away as suggested did resolve it, but I had to configure the monitor's supported sync rates manually in xorg.conf to get my usual resolution. Should I expect other problems with this?

Also, did anbody file this in Bugzilla (couldn't find anything)? Otherwise, I'm going to do so.
