After last night's Roma display of lovely football with no end result in losing 2 - 0 to Man Utd at home which basically ended Roma's hope of a Champions League Semi Final, is it true that Roma don't have the edge over top European teams without Totti?

Every team will miss a player of his quality but there just looked like there was no-one willing to ACTUALLY score, no final product, no killer edge.

Is this really where strength in depth really shows?

I'm assuming Roma is the team from Rome. No clue on Totti. I came here to discuss calico cats, but I see that it wasn't a misspelling in the topic. :D

I am no soccer fan but Roma before Totti was just a Serie A team without much hopes to win anything, they were always in Serie A but in 50 years only won 3 times the scudetto (1 with totti), they never won any international cup and only recently started to play in Champions league. For them quarter finals is more than an honourable exit :-)
The bigger team Juventus, Milan, Inter also did not do well this year, it is elections time again in Italy in 2 weeks maybe that is the problem ....

I would much rather see Roma or Lazio in Europe than Juventus or Milan... or Arsenal for that matter!

It was Capello btw. that made of Roma and Totti what they are now, lets see if he can do it with England as well ...

I wouldn't bet on that.

Working for a club, you can always buy the players you need or want.

But with a national team, Capello is stuck with the players he got.

And there is not one single good english player.

All newspapers here are praising the new style of the Premier League soccer, 4 teams out of 4 in the quarter finals not bad, there is still Barcelona trying out bad to win as last obstacle for them.
Roma still has a chance to win the Italian Scudetto this year and if they win agains Genoa on Sunday, almost certainly Totti won't play against Manchester Utd. and they will save their energies for the Serie A, if they lose (improbable) they will almost certainly do everything they can to reach the semifinals in Champions league.

and how many english players play in that four clubs?

Besides, England only has that four clubs. Its league is divided. The four rich big ones, and the poor rest. And in other countries it will become exactly the same.

That sucks.

Man utd has 14 player out of 30 born in England. Chelsea probably less ...

Maybe the fact that countries with the rank 1-3 (like england) can only send 4 teams to the Champions league has something to do with the fact that england has sent 4 clubs ...

i'd have a look at what happened last year, the people that went from the Champions league to the UEFA cup.

England did quite well...

Professional football sucks. Mmmkay ?
Its like a stupid stock exchange. It's all about money.

Watch/play amateur football and put your money/time to good use like i don't know what... helping others or new hobbies, your education or stuff.

its about money just as every professional sport.
the problem is that its dumb, it doesnt offer anything else to the audience than fanboyism. nothing at all. this goes as far as people obsessing about player transfers and deals. it might be fun to play football, but its an incredibly stupid sport to watch.

A list with Sevilla as the best club in 06/07 and the third best in 05/06 is crap. Too many points given for the UEFA Cup and the Spanish Cup. Nobody cares about those.

And Bayern only tied Getafe in Munich

(edit) Sorry, it seems that Espanyol (     ) was the best in 06/07.

any list that puts lyon ahead of Man Utd is ridiculous when they have beaten them 2 years in a row

Well FIFA and UEFA ranking are not meant to be used to compare the relative strength of club (or countries) but are based on the number of victories in international games in the last 5 years. If you look carefully you see that in fact in 06/07 and 07/08 Man utd. was better but taken over 5 years Lyon was better. Next year Man utd. will almost certainly surpass them.
