I'd like to install Gentoo on yet another computer, but the guy who uses it doesn't want to not be able to use his computer for 3 days, so I was wondering if it is possible to install gentoo using something like bochs in windows so that he could still use the computer for basic functions such as email IM and typing reports.

I'm sure something like that is possible, but extremely difficult to do. Windows doesn't have built-in support to access most Linux filesystems, so you'd really be messing with the computer to get this to work.

On the other hand, if this person just wants access to e-mail, internet and an office suite, I've heard that you can use Knoppix to start up the install, chroot into the gentoo CD and build the system from there. I'm sure another member of the forum can elaborate as I've never tried that. But, I'm sure its possible.

With Knoppix, you have access to the entire array of applications it includes while your Gentoo system is compiling itself.

thats not the point... after chrooting you would use the gcc of the stage.

Other solution:
If you and your friend both have x86 or both amd64 or whatever then you could make a dir, chroot in it and install gentoo as usual.
then you take a look at his hardware (boot knoppix or gentoo livecd, save the output of lsmod, lspci, lsusb, dmesg) -- you should get enough information for a basic kernel configuration.

If everything is ready take the livecd again, fdisk and copy the ready gentoo installation on his computer, some fine-tuning and thats it :D

I am installing inside windows as we speak. Finishing up the install.

What I did was install colinux using the gentoo download.

So then I added entries in it's config for my physical drive devices. Then I mounted them and installed like usual. No problems.

And earlier I checked it; it does boot.

edit: Though you cannot do the "install grub/lilo to mbr" from inside colinux since that requires direct access to the real HD device (which you don't have). Though I bet you could install grub/lilo to a specific partition and then use a howto for using NTLDR for that.
