Something good both for a server or a desktop : http://logsend.sourceforge.net
If you have a MTA installed logsend will watch your log files, filter them and send them to you by e-mail.
And an excellent editor, like Kate but for GTK2 : http://mooedit.sourceforge.net/ |

app-portage/elogv rocks for sorting emerge logs in different orders, finding and reading emerge messages. It's an ncurses utility that does the job better than anything else I've tried. You can even delete single or multiple files reasonably well, though delete is delete, no undo. Also, be careful, the alphabetical sorts are alphabetical, (current version 0.7 anyway) so package versions may be out of order when sorted that way, though can sort by date, too.
Biggest Advantage: No need to leave the keyboard at all. With elogviewer I spent more time clicking back and forth between frames than reading the info I needed!
Mild Disadvantage: No viewing whole log file, but that's better done in another screen or term or something anyway.
vimperator extension for firefox is another productivity booster. |

I just discovered luit. Pretty handy when you have utf8 systems but have to logon to an old iso8859-1 system with umlauts etc. _________________ Modolingo - International Language Center

I'm the only one who thinks that this thread has become completely useless? People come in, post about their favourite random app and leaves. Nobody cares about the apps posted.

Merged the above post.

juantxorena wrote: | People come in, post about their favourite random app and leaves. | That is somewhat the point of this topic, to tell others of a useful or otherwise interesting piece of software which has attracted less attention that the poster considers due, those following the topic can then evaluate the software for themselves.
juantxorena wrote: | Nobody cares about the apps posted. | That is a rather sweeping generalization to make from ones own disinterest. |

Now that Audacious is dead ( or nearly so ), I needed a new media player.
Exaile seems reasonable. http://www.exaile.org/
Written in Python, and with a reasonable interface, I now use it as my default mp3 player.
From the web site:
"Exaile is a music manager and player for GTK+ written in Python. It incorporates automatic fetching of album art, handling of large libraries, lyrics fetching, artist/album information via Wikipedia, Last.fm submission support, and optional iPod support via a plugin.
In addition, Exaile also includes a built-in SHOUTcast directory browser, tabbed playlists (so you can have more than one playlist open at a time), blacklisting of tracks (so they don't get scanned into your library) and more." _________________ The soul, when accustomed to superfluous things, acquires a strong habit of desiring things. Oki, iv'e seen all from amsn to GAIM to som other messanging clients and i think we have forgot one of the best...
centerim - CenterIM is a Textbased MSN/ICQ/AOL/JABBER/IRC client.
http://www.centerim.org/index.php/Main_Page
Combined with screen this messanger creates a secure, always availible and centered messaging system that keeps logs and discussions safe and on the same place.
So screen and centerim is my combination tip.

Just stumbled across this thread through google, I definitely should check the forums more often
I'm a minimalist so the following two might be my taste and not necessarily every other ones but they are defintely two greatly developed designed and maintained apps that everyone should know about
1.) Gentoo (no, not Gentoo, Gentoo - the file browser!) http://www.obsession.se/gentoo/
2.) Zathura and all the rest of the PWMT programs suite. A PDF viewer. It's almost perfectly minimal and configurable, tho it still has some infancy issues such as lack of good caching which might make viewing fancy documents a bit cumbersome.
3.) gRoff - 'nuff said - with all that LaTeX Hype these days I'd compare Groff to be to LaTeX what LEGO is to Playmobil or Linux is to Windows. Linux users, use Groff.
4.) SAGE - Mathematics - Like Scilab, just for the complicated mathematical non numerical stuff.
Two more words on 1.) Gentoo: Seems like it has been mentione several times already. However you should definitly check out a recent version - a lot has changed and improved. I think it has been reworked from scratch. and 4.) SAGE - Some mention R, some Scilab, some Maxima and some Octave. SAGE is an unified Interface to all of them.
Edit: Oh seems like I just revived a two years old thread, sorry  |

While this thread's warm I'll mention XMMS2 - it works like MPD. Uses slightly more CPU than that, but I've found it much more reliable. |
