Most of the programs I'm using nowadays are already well-known or mentioned here before (which usually lead me to using them  ), but there are some programs I'd like to mention:
xsendevt is a nice program for triggering keyboard events.
kdialog (I think it comes as a part of KDE) and qnotify (and why not also gnotify, just happened to find this link when I searched for a link to qnotify) are great programs to use in scripts, where you may want to somehow inform the user or to ask him/her something.
I think LinEAK is also worth of mentioning, if you're having some fancy extra buttons in your keyboard you'd like to use.
edit: Oh, and there is gdialog (which probably comes with gnome). |

It's essentially a command-line wrapper for every archiving tool I could find and, to keep your filesystem clean, it will create a containing folder (named as the archive's name minus the extension) if the archive does not provide one. Also, since I couldn't find any cases where it broke anything, it does a case-insensitive compare of the archive extensions and, as of version 0.2.0, it also checks the file header (using /usr/bin/file) if it still doesn't recognize the file's type. |
I've just discovered this one and I must say that it's really nice 
This one has been recently added to the portage tree : recordmydesktop.
The name is self-explaining : it is a desktop session recorder producing Ogg video/audio files.
P.S. : Don't forget to add the theora use flag and run emerge -uDN world if you want to be able to show the videos

third party software in gentoo installation and making it work is not easy for everybody.
like portage some utility must be made available to install and uninstall other softwares which are not in portage .
while it has been difficult to keep the system updated and working to our satisfaction and stability, it is more difficult to install third party softwares and keep track of it.
also there are less or no promotion for the new softwares which are not in portage.
this thread has been for a long time but i have seen it today only.
there has to be some kind of newsletter or notification of the new softwares.
then support for the new software is nil. we must have a group for these activities.

Theres the project sunrise overlay that contains many ebuilds that are destined to be in portage.

Also, making your own ebuilds for external software isn't very hard, since it uses bash scripting its very easy to pick up. There is very good documentation for how to write an ebuild in the gentoo main site doc section.
Since you're making them for your own personal use, they don't have to deal with all the stuff that the ones in portage deal with, but when you have one that works you might as well put in the bugs database =) |

Another little heads up for Scribus here ... it is at least as good as the the commercial publishing tools like Adobe Publisher, Quark Express and others and this one is free, it's not small cahs that many companies (and small one person magazines) could save by switching to Scribus.
I think we would do well to promote this program more as a reason to switch to try out Linux, sure we might target as big a audience as with Firefox but there are quite a few people out there publishing something on paper (or pdf).

Something similar => Wink
It records to flashvideo, so you can easily embed the results in a web page.
I've got it running, have not yet done anything with it, but it looks terribly cool so far. EDIT : Damn ... works as advertised.
Fellow gentooistas : It is not in portage yet. boohoo.

This is exactly what I am wondering about, too!! It is an excellent pdf viewer with minimal dependencies. And much better for the eye compared to xpdf.
UPDATE:
I didn`t see that it was added on 25 Nov 2006. So, my text was only a breeze of hot air |

A great application that I have used both in windows and linux is Waste.

It is a P2P shared-key application that allows for bi-directional encrypted data flow -
supports file transfers, chat, chat rooms.
The guy that wrote WinAmp released his original code under the GPL a few years back and the project has progressed a little since then.
For sharing files and chatting I trust this a lot more than any public IM service -
I've had my best results using dyn-dns to have all people connect to one central PC -
key management is easier and people always know where to connect!

like babylon for windows its an dockapp for kde translating selected words (it can use the same dictionaries as babylon) by a press of a mousekey and a modifier (I use the windowskey). so holding the windowskey an doubleclicking on an selectible word in X11 pops up a little window with the translation. the author is very friedly, he added an dcop-interface once I asked him for that. have fun |

I was studying memory to give something new to my students to learn English faster, and I stumbled on spaced repetition on wikipedia. I tried a great deal of different flashcard software (over several months) but the one I like the best runs on Linux: mnemosyne. It needs a lot of work to make it pretty, but it helped me learn the fastest I've learned in my life and it still has support for unicode, and images, with support for sound on the way. I took a break from using it - I'm on vacation - but it does work. I learned hundreads of Chinese pinyin words in a month, to the amazement of my fellow teachers. They think I stay up every night doing translation work to speak better. As soon as I finish my vacation I'll be over that like white on rice, just like before.
It's great for remembering anything that can be made into a single question: names, foreign language vocab and grammar, math, etc. anything non-procedural ( so I can't use it to learn guitar ). It is hosted by sourceforge, but it doesn't explain the software well, so I recomend using it after reading about similar products on www.supermemo.com, www.fullrecall.com, and www.memorylifter.com. |

OK, after reading all 14 pages and finding some really good underestimated apps, it's time for me to post some of my own, which I use on regular basis
CLI list:
- screen - great console app, really really underestimated. Try to set it up to to show taskbar / statusbar - something like this:

- sylpheed-claws - best GUI MUA out there
- LinuxDC++ - for all those Direct Connect zombies out there
- Ksubtile - aligning all those misaligned subtitles
- Kile - great LaTeX frontend for beginners
- Adesklets - lightweight desklets, I use weatherforecast and desknotes.
And few of the programs that are pure classics, which everyone must have on their computers
- fvwm - most configurable WM out there
- Boinc - Client for using your CPU idle cycles for medicine researches (something like seti@home). please join www.worldcommunitygrid.org project, Formula 1 Rebels team, and contribute in finding cure for AIDS, cancer, muscle disthrophy.....
I hope some of you find usefull apps in this list, and please report it back in this thread

I'll see this and raise you: one of the least mentioned pieces of software is OpenSSH. The OpenSSH deamon by default provides not only the SSH protocol but SFTP and SCP protocols and command line tools.
no one, should be using FTP for anything anymore, FTP == cleartext password tranmission between the client and the server.
the more people that use SFTP or SCP for file transfers the better off everyone will be! plus you most likely already have SSH running... why bother with a second daemon that is significantly less secure. |
