hey guys i just installed linux after a year and a half of not having it. However i got debian working with colinux and not gentoo but the diffrences arent huge (well maybe they are but for the sake of not argueing dont ...argue) could anyone share their thoughts on the funnest thing to do with their linux boxes once they have them up and running? i installed sshd and i have about 15 gigs of open space so thats not a problem. i donnt really want to use a gui for this though so try to think of something that is somewhat cli oriented. thanks for your input |

There are tons of things you can do with linux for fun. In fact there is a whole book written on neat projects you can make out of linux boxes. Here's a good link about it's description:

Though they are books, cost money, take time to read, and probalby don't teach you a whole lot (especially since they are based on fedora )
Maybe you can go to a book store and just browse through them to get the general idea. But the list of things you can do with linux is endless Just let your imagination go wild.
If I were you though I'd maybe make a juke box out of it. Or perhaps you can make your own internet solution for your place out of it. For example I have a box with a 4 port network card that acts like a switch which only cost me 15 dollars total, and I have a second card go to the cable modem. And viola everyone gets internet, and no mess with routers and extra cables If you want I can dig up the place I bought the card and give you a link.
I always wanted to make a linux box to play mp3s in my car. Though that would be quite a lot of work, the hard drive would probably die quick, and I just ended up getting a 4 gig mp3 player recently anyways. Though it's a neat idea.
Another great thing you could do is make a tv recorder out of it if it's powerful enough. I think it's called MythTV or something but from what I've seen it looks very neat and powerful as far as managing recorded shows and whatnot.
Have fun and let me know what you choose to do and how it works out |
