ok, here is the problem i am having;
i have gentoo 1.2, and when initially installed, all i had avalaible as a NIC card was this ISA 3Com Etherlink 509 series.
i bought a Asound 10/100 PCI NIC , so i want to replcae with the one above.
i took the on 3Com out and put the Asound in but i dont know where to go on from there.
my attempt is to uninstall the old one and install the new one, but i have no clue on how to.
thanks in advance _________________ Signature deleted by moderator: Your signature consisted in excees the of 30 Gigabytes!!! |

You will almost certainly need kernel support for the card - I dont believe that devfs alone will get your card working. In any event, if you are not running a devfs fs, then it is certainly worth doing so.
For you eth card, check out the kernel compile HOWTOs, because you will need to compile the card support as either kernel space built-in or as a module. I'm not a Linux box at the moment so cannot advise you what the module name is, but you will most probably want to insert it into your /etc/modules.autoload file so that its available as boot. _________________ Someone told me that "..they only ever made one mistake...."

Quote: | i bought a Asound 10/100 PCI NIC | It apperars thast most Asound 10/100 PCI NIC cards use a RealTek chipset, 8139 to be specific, although some apparently use an ADMtek chipset. If your card has the RealTek chipset then you need 8139too compiled into your kernel or as a module. I don't know what module ADMtek uses, but this should get you started. Check Google for Asound 10/100 PCI NIC and you'll find your answer for sure. |
