lspci: command not found [SOLVED]

  • Quote

Post by urcindalo » Tue Feb 08, 2005 3:24 pm

Hi everyone!

First of all, thanks for reading this.

I'm a complete newbie to PC, Linux and Gentoo. As a Mac OS X user, I have chosen Gentoo for my new PC at work since it is a Linux distro very similar to "fink", the way I install GNU software under OS X. Besides, I've been told the Gentoo community is really helpful ;-)

I've been trying for a whole month to install AMD64 Gentoo from stage 1, and finally this week both "bootstrap.sh" and "emerge system" worked flawlessly.

After I compiled the kernel and rebooted, I emerged kde and koffice right away, and then emerged the three nvidia packages as indicated in the docs for my GeForce 5200.
Then I created my xorg.conf, but the nvidia driver failed to load.

The thing is that when I did a "lspci" command, I got this answer:

Code: Select all

bash-2.05b# lspci
bash: lspci: command not found
Why is that? I don't know how to procede from here. Any kind of step by step help woulb be much appreciated.

I'm used to the command line, but the one from Mac OS X, which is based upon FreeBSD. I got no Linux experience whatsoever.

Thanks in advance.

FYI, here is the result of my "dmesg":

Code: Select all

After I compiled the kernel and rebooted, I emerged kde and koffice right away, and then emerged the three nvidia packages as indicated in the docs for my GeForce 5200.
Then I created my xorg.conf, but the nvidia driver failed to load.
you need to run the command:

Code: Select all

modprobe nvidia
The thing is that when I did a "lspci" command, I got this answer:

Code: Select all

bash-2.05b# lspci
bash: lspci: command not found
that command is part of pciutils so you have to

Code: Select all

emerge pciutils

Well, I solved the "lspci" problem. I needed to "etc-update" my system, to update one config file.

Thanks Trevoke and loftwyr. Yes, I had to emerge pciutils.

Why did it work to just etc-update? Because I had emerged vmware-workstation just a minutes ago, it needed pciutils as a dependency, and I had written my "lspci" solution before reading your answers.

On the other had, should I do something so that the nvidia module is loaded at boot time?
