I installed Gentoo on my Sony VAIO NV170 laptop. The built-in sound card is (got this by cat /proc/pci | grep audio) Intel Corp. 82801CA/CAM AC'97 Audio (rev 2).

I installed alsa. the driver (I use snd-intel8x0) could load, but the sound is really terrible. Have anyone configured this card successfully? Thanks.

from 0.9.0rc6, it is giving me very good results. If you don't like it, try the OSS/Free kernel drivers. They also work.

There's not much noise. But the sound is broken up. If I turn down the PCM, there's no sound at all.

My T30 has exactly the same sound card. I use alsa too. But I use the driver i810_audio instead of snd-intel8x0. The sound quality seems ok to me.

Isn't i810_audio the OSS/Free kernel driver???

Have you set up a proper kernel with ACPI?
