Plain and simple, I want to get quake 1 up and running (single and multiplayer). I'm really confused as to how to do this. Can someone please point me to a decent guide or give me guidance? Please do not respond with "just emerge quakeforge"...

quakeforge is in cvs but I suggest trying zquake instead:
http://zquake.frag.ru/eng/download/

Those quake instructions are ancient, they might not work.

Thanks man... Yea, I had looked at those instructions (I do google before I post) but they did seem a bit dated. I'll check out zquake.

start with emerge quakeforge
then cp the required data (pak0.pak and pak1.pak) from you quake1 cd or instalation from the id1/ dir to /usr/share/games/quakeforge/id1
Thats all I needed to do.

Cheers and happy fragging

Thanks Mindstab, I'll try it. I finally got fuhquake running after dealing with the guys in #fuhquake telling me linux is a "gay os" over and over again. The problem is that the game runs like crap (really low framerate) whenever I join a game through xqf. I think I'm gonna try out quakeforge instead. Anyone got quakeworld working with tenebrae quake??? That would be sweet!!

I can't speak for others, but glxquake is easiest for me. You copy your q1 install from windows, and replace glquake.exe with glxquake. I had burned my install to cd a while back, so to install, I just mount the disc, copy to /usr/local/games/quake, and untar glxquake to that dir.

And there's always this

moreQuakeWorld is the best linux quakeworld client: http://hem.passagen.se/mjyyk/mqwcl/

I use ProQuake to play single and multiplayer quake (not quakeworld): http://www.planetquake.com/proquake/

I don't like quakeforge either. I like my quake* installations intirely kept in /usr/local/games/quake*
