The Basics of Google Search
To enter a query into Google, just type in a few descriptive words and hit the 'enter' key (or click on the Google Search button) for a list of relevant web pages. Since Google only returns web pages that contain all the words in your query, refining or narrowing your search is as simple as adding more words to the search terms you have already entered. Your new query will return a smaller subset of the pages Google found for your original "too-broad" query.

Are you using pppoa or pppoe ?
if it is pppoa then you need to visit sourceforge.net and look for speedtouch, download the drivers, and follow the how to also
I do not know if this works from a stage 1 or 2, but it has benn reported to work on a stage 3.
or you could just set up another box with the modem connected to the internet.
boot into you gentoo cd
do net-setup eth0
and set gateway to the ip address of the machine connected to the net
hope this helps |

you are going to be in a bit of a chicken and egg situation.
I suggest if you have another machine, already connected to the net, that you use this to install gentoo on the box you want (this is how I got round it) then once gentoo is set up and working i.e. it boots successfully do an emerge speedtouch this will download and install the drivers for gentoo
then edit the files as per how to doc plug in modem and et voilla
you do need to read the how to though, as you need to set the correct modules for ppp etc
I think this is the easiest method if you have a box already connected to the net, otherwise it is going to be more tricky, and you will have to read the alternative install how to from gentoo
good luck |

Thnx
that makes more sense, the worry for me was that using the gentoo sources implies pppoe - I'm on pppoa - being in the uk, and I know thare are problems with the co-existance of these modules. but I'll give it a try - as soon as I can meke grub work other than giving read errors and the latest perl manages too emerge.
