I've got a system on Gentoo 1.2 and I'd like to upgrade it to 1.4. This system sits in my closet and has no monitor/keyboard, so I'd really prefer to do the upgrade remotely so I dont have to pull it out of the closet and steal my main systems monitor/keyboard.

Would you recommend against remotely upgrading this system?

Thanks!

Give it a whirl, because if worse comes to worst, you can always drag it out and plug it into a monitor. If, on the other hand, you were separated from this computer by one or more oceans, I would be a little more hesitant. ;)

I haven't done a 1.2 -> 1.4 over ssh, but I have updated/installed packages on my 1.4 box many times over ssh, and have had no problems.

I did mess up with a kernel once though (forgot to add support for reiserfs), and had to make a trip into the colo to fix that

just emerge -u world and that should do it ...there's no problem doing it via ssh :) ...don't know why it should :)

Going from 1.2 to 1.4 is a bit more than emerge -u world, unless gcc 3.2 is already installed on the system.

According to this, the upgrade process from 1.2 => 1.4 is quite complex.

I have no doubts that I can complete the upgrade, but that computer is a web server (w/ 2 virtual hosts), mail server, NFS server, and Samba server. With the amount of services running and the speed of the processor (392mhz PII), you can guess that I want this to be as optimized as it possibly can. The first two services are time critical and I would really like to keep the downtime to a minimum, and getting locked out of SSH durring the upgrade would not be desireable.

It runs gcc 2.95.3, so emerge -u world will not do the trick.

My real question is: will the upgrade process from 1.2 => 1.4 break a running ssh session? and would there be any reason why ssh would not start up after the upgrade is complete and the system is rebooted (since I will be recompiling the kernel w/ gcc-3.2)?

I'm in the middle of doing an upgrade the same way you want to. My server is also sitting in the closet w/o monitor or keyboard. It works fine. SSH remains to work just fine and you will be able to login without problems during the entire process.

Running screen might also be a good idea..

I completed step3 successfully after which I had to reboot (I was unable to login to IMAP though SSH was still working). Everything went smoothly and all services came up as expected.
