I want to upgrade my system from 1.2 to 1.4. Since I need to change the partition structure, I'm going to do a reinstall (rather than use the upgrade scripts), but I'd like to make it as painless and quick as possible (I need to keep using this machine for work). So, I'm planning on backing up my /home and /etc directories and /usr/src/linux/.config. After doing the stage 2 install and building a kernel, I plan to restore /home and /etc, and then just do emerge -u world. Does this sound like it will work? Any other suggestions on how to do this as efficiently as possible?

TIA.

I'm not sure, but i think that some config-files in /etc are different, because of a new gcc-version in Gentoo-1.4.

I suggest to backup the config-files you have edited (fstab, XF86Config, etc...) and copy them back after the upgrade. The file /etc/make.conf is different in 1.4, so don''t copy that one back.
