I've looked through the forums and none of the posted tips seem to fix my specific problem, so here goes:

I emerged xine-ui-0.9.16
I created a raw device at /dev/dvd to read from my dvd drive
(this also happens when it's just a regular symlink to /dev/cdroms/cdrom0)

Using the defaul dvd pluggin, the DVD will play for about ~2 seconds and then crash, dumping this to console:
Code:
 demux_mpeg_block: error! 01 ba 44 (should be 0x000001)
demux_mpeg_block: error! 01 ba 44 (should be 0x000001)
demux_mpeg_block: error! 01 ba 44 (should be 0x000001)
demux_mpeg_block: error! 01 ba 44 (should be 0x000001)
demux_mpeg_block: error! 01 ba 44 (should be 0x000001)
demux_mpeg_block: error! 01 ba 44 (should be 0x000001)
metronom: audio discontinuity #34, type is 0, disc_off 0
metronom: waiting for in_discontinuity update #34
metronom: video discontinuity #34, type is 0, disc_off is 0
metronom: video vpts adjusted with prebuffer to 15183916
metronom: audio vpts adjusted with prebuffer to 15183917
xine: xine_play
xine: xine_play_internal ...done
I can use the Navigator applet to get to the DVD menu, which works properly (as long as there's no animation in the menu itself), but again, once I select wht to play, it runs for about 4 seconds and bails.

The xine-dvdnav pluggin apparently doesn't wrk with this versin of xine-lib, and installing the old version of xine-lib clobbers the current installation. Okay, so I uninstall everything and rebuild using the 0.9.13 files... Still no good.

Anyone know what to do?

I could only get dvd playback with the following combo:

    xine-lib-0.9.13-r2
    xine-dvdnav-0.9.13
    xine-ui-0.9.13

The newer versions are still too much beta for me.

Both of those layouts (0.9.13 and the newest) cause the above problem. So if xine isn't the source of this problem, what else could be?

I tried other players, with these results:
Mplayer: Will play the DVD, but every 5-10 seconds, it will loose its encoding, the screen gets al garbled, and then slowly recovers. Here's the output:
Code:

and sometimes this is thrown in as well:

Okay, so I tried Ogle. It can get through menus (not without garbled screen and errors, mind you), but when it tries to play the movie, it ges or about 4 seconds and dumps:

and that's all she wrote.
Leads me to believe that my problem may not be with xine so much as something's up with my DVD config. What should I be looking at (as far as system config stuff) to make sure it's all proper? Culd it be my DVD drive isn't linux-happy?

I've never been able to get Ogle or Mplayer to play DVDs for me either, and I can only play them with Xine if I execute Xine as:
Code:
xine -a 0 -p dvdnav://:1.1

I could never start Xine normally and press the DVDNAV or play or anything. But that line there plays them just fine...menus and the entire movie without disruption.
