Hello.
I am thinking about to invest in a new dvd-drive. I want this because i have seen a cheap one in a local store, its a BTC with a decent speed.
Does every dvd-drive work? Or are there specific drivers for every drive out there? And what do i need to do to get it to work properly (I really don't care about speed, i have plenty of time)?
PS.: Its a CD-R and a DVD-R and everything in one.
Thanks in advance. _________________ Laptop: Zepto 2314W, Pentium M 730, 512 Mb Pc-3200

For the most part, DVD drives very well in linux. Drivers really aren't necessary. If you plan on burning CD/DVD's, you'll need install software such as cdrecord. _________________ Gentoo...it's like wiping your ass with silk. Or sandpaper. |

I do not own one, but there may be difference between brands.
A dvd burner may not right CDs as fast as a CDburner, or so I read recently.
Last year I saw a write up (non-linux oriented page) and a Sony DVDburner rated better overall than a Plextor.
I'm seeing dual layer Sony's (710) going for $99 after rebate so consider going with better one.
One note, I installed a DVD player along side my cdburner as one article pointed out that the mechanical stress of burning may wear them out faster. _________________ ASPushkin

While I have no arguement with your post, it's a little off-topic and doesn't answer the question. The question (as I interpreted it to be) was whether there's a difference in linux support between brands.
As far as hardware differences go, of course some work better than others. That's the case with any piece of hardware. It's up to the consumer to determine which brand is best for them.
Interesting tidbit about the wearing down of the drives though. _________________ Gentoo...it's like wiping your ass with silk. Or sandpaper. |

Get a well known brand like NEC. I just bought a NEC 3520a in Oslo for NOK 465.- inc vat, plus frakt. And it works a charm..
mvh
Edit: Use well known media too, like Verbatim.. _________________ "I am not bound to please thee with my answers" W.S. |
