Hi folks,
You know, the issue of KDE4s usability is certainly a "hot button topic". I don't want to focus on that. I'm more concerned that the plethora of options that are available in KDE4 is hard to get a handle on. In particular, the documentation on the kde website: http://www.kde.org/documentation/ all referese to the kde3 series. And, for example, Plasma's website -> Documentation link hasn't been populated. So, I think much of the problem is that the knowledge of how to use and modify kde4 is not widely available for reading. Sure, you can tinker (and many of us gentooers love to tinker) .... but sometimes we don't have TIME to tinker. Anyway, all that aside, how's about a thread with your favorite links for using and configuring KDE4.
Here's two I've found. I'll post more here as I find them.
http://www.kde.org/announcements/4.0/guide.php
http://polishlinux.org/kde/kde-4-rev-790000-better-stability-and-performance/
A third, possibly less useful:
http://www.fsdaily.com/EndUser/Your_Rough_Guide_to_Plasma_Desktop_Shell_in_KDE_4/related_links
Of course, using the blogophere for documention seems unstable at best and potentially archaic at worst.
Best,
Mark |

It's very minor, but I really enjoyed the "System Load Viewer" applet that was available as a standard taskbar applet in KDE 3.x. At a glance, it gives you CPU, RAM, and swap usage and it easily differentiates between RAM that is actually used by programs versus RAM that is used for cache/buffers. When I first upgraded to KDE 4.x, this applet/widget was absent, to my disappointment. I was happy to see that emerging kde-base/kdeplasma-addons gave me a KDE4 version of this same app.
The only thing I am missing now is a graphical "biff" application or e-mail notifier. There is the "Incoming Message" widget, but it only works with KMail, XChat, and Kopete. All I want is something functionally equivalent to http://www.kbiff.org/ that works with KDE 4.x and I cannot find it, or at least it's not in Portage. All I need is something that can periodically query a standard POP3 mailbox and display an icon informing me that there are new e-mails. What I don't want is such an app that is needlessly tied to a specific e-mail client, such as the "Incoming Message" widget. You'd think this were some kind of extremely rare edge case that nobody else has any use for, judging from the lack of widgets available. |
