After upgrading GCC to version 3.3.5, I've had problems to be able to compile some libraries and programs (for example GTK+-2.4.14). If somebody has a similar problem, will be able to solve it with:
Code: | emerge libtool && fix_libtool_files.sh 3.3.4 |
Good luck to all.
Mod edit: Stuck, as these keep popping up. See also the FAQ and libstdc++.la: No such file or directory - errors and tips --kallamej

unstuck.

Thank you. This worked great! Now I wonder why this script isn't run automatically when one upgrades gcc?

very good advice! Why isn't this run automatically? Seems like an obvious thing thatneeds to be done to make the system operational. |

Another big thanks here
I appreciate the fish, but now teach me how to fish, please.
Should I have known that gcc had a fix script to move from one version to the next? Is there some place I could have gone aside from the forums? How did you find the solution?
Thanks again! |

Just for curiosity, does anyone know which file
(not getting updated) caused this problem?
Code: | grep: /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.3.4/libstdc++.la: No such file or directory
/bin/sed: can't read /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.3.4/libstdc++.la: No such file or directory
libtool: link: `/usr/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.3.4/libstdc++.la' is not a valid libtool archive
make[4]: *** [libdirectfb_sdlinput.la] Error 1
make[4]: *** Waiting for unfinished jobs....
grep: /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.3.4/libstdc++.la: No such file or directory
/bin/sed: can't read /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.3.4/libstdc++.la: No such file or directory
libtool: link: `/usr/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.3.4/libstdc++.la' is not a valid libtool archive |
The script fixed it, but looking at the output,
I still couldn't figure out the exact file that caused
the error.
Removing the KDE lines (which obviously didn't
cause this problem) leaves only:

Thanks very much! This is quite wonderful help.
Like Eric R., I too am curious how you knew about this. Is there a similar script for each program on my computer? Why didn't I run across these before? When/how did you learn about them?
Thanks again! _________________ Flying is the art of throwing yourself at the ground and missing.

Well I did a search for gcc and that was one of the things it found. I know from reading earlier posts that if gcc gets messed up you are in trouble so I usually check around to make sure. I'm one of those that if it wasn't for bad luck I would have no luck at all.
Most of the stuff I have learned was done by searching then asking questions. There are developers on here sometimes and they are also in the chat rooms. You can learn a lot there too.
Other than that, clueless.

Restarting download of Open Office. Dial-up sucks. Usually about 23 to 24 hours to download. _________________ My rig: Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3P mobo, AMD FX-8350 Eight-Core CPU, ZALMAN CNPS10X Performa CPU cooler,

Well I wound up useing the command fix_libtool_files.sh 3.3.4 to fix it. It works now. I'm not sure what either of them do though.

I ran the script and it fixed lots of stuff, but for example: emerge attr still gives a compile error searching for 3.3.4. Even the next day after a reboot, so it's not env stuff that's wrong. I even deleted the work directory and distfile. :/

None of the stuff works for me.
I tried to do it all the things listed in many of the posts all around, but none seem to have solved the problem. Any ebuild needing g++ can't seem to find the c++ libraries.
I tried the following:
Code: | >env-update
>source /etc/profile
>fix_libtool_files.sh 3.3.4
|
Switched around with gcc-config. Redid the above. Recompiled 3.3.5. Nothing works. Anyone know what else I can do other than downgrading back to 3.3.4 (last resort and hopefully that WILL work). Currently I am extremely thankful gcc doesn't depend of g++!!!
fix_libtool_files.sh 3.3.4 = Code: |

Ok, it seems to be working now.
I reverted back to 3.3.4 and that worked fine. Then I cleared the distfiles and the .../portage/tmp files. I used the default use flags, default download site, and probably what fixed it is I killed the high optimizations. I lowered them to -02. Finally, I reemerged 3.3.5.
Didn't even need to use the fix_libtool_files.sh script. Just re-sourced and the new gcc worked fine.
I think before I somehow lost g++. Like it was either poorly compiled or not at all.
Anyway, thx all. Good luck to those who are still having trouble.
Now going to go do the script, as last time it fixed some kde links. |

Note that it for some reason is lookin in 3.3.5.4??? What would cause this? It's not just smb4k, it's still any app that tries to link to libstdc++.la

I'm having a very similar problem when trying to emerge gedit. I get:
Code: |
grep: /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i386-pc-linux-gnu/3.3.4/libstdc++.la: No such file or directory
|
In addition to looking for the wrong version (3.3.4 rather than 3.3.5), it's also looking for the wrong architecture (i386 rather than i686). I tried running:
Code: |
env-update
. /etc/profile
fix_libtool_files.sh 3.3.4
|
The script fixed a few things but the problem persists. Any ideas? |

I also re-emerged libtool. I'm not sure how much it helped but I did that then ran the fix lib tool thingy. I have not had a problem yet, give me more time though. I'm working on it. Open office is being downloaded and that is one heck of a compile job.

I also reemerged libtool, as well as ran the fix for the 3.3.4 libs (even though I have gcc 3.3.5). That might have helped, although I can't say whether or not reemerging libtool had any effect, because I did both and now everything works fine. |
