Why cant I have both dvix4linux and xvid installed?
I want to compare divx5 and xvid quality.
Mplayer failed to view my xvid avi file, divx4linux not installed
I also want to compare ogg-vorbis and mp3 but dvdrip always fails tying to use ogg-vorbis.
Am I missing something?
Does anyone have experience flaskmpeg vs dvdrip/transcode.
Any advise how to get the best quality rips is appreciated. |

Well transcode doesn't seem to play well with both installed, but I've used both in both windows and linux, tried every new xvid build but divx has always seemed to be better. As far as the ogg-vorbis encoding problem, did you emerge ogm-tools? You need to do it even though it is masked. Also make sure you use transcode .6.1 with dvdrip, not .6 or .6.2, they just don't play right for some reason, that could be a reason for the ogg problems. As far as quality goes, I've done at least 100 encodes of movies/tv shows with divx/xvid, and I have to say that flaskmpeg is a poor tool at best, it causes sync and general quality problems. I get the best quality with virtual dub/avisynth and headache in windows. You can see how to do that at http://www.everwicked.com . As for linux, I've been extremely happy with transcode (dvdrip is just a front end), it's usually faster and always kicks out better encodes. As far as quality tips, always do a two pass encode, other than that, make sure that the frame size suits the bitrate/framerate you're encoding at. Besides those 2 things dvdrip is pretty idiot proof and turns out equivalent if not better rips than windows does.
