anyone else having the screwed clock behaviour on a suspend to RAM with recent kernels (>2.6.9-nitro2)? i use ntpdate and sync my (hardware) clock, but upon a reactivation from a suspend to RAM 2.6.10-nitro2 and 2.6.10-nitro4 have screwed the clock - depending on the time sleeping - about several minutes to several hours (record was 12 hours advanced). with 2.6.9-nitro2 there's no such issue. _________________ Easily backup up your system? klick

I'm a little puzzled...
Is there the zaphod-cpu-sched patch already in one of those? |

Anyone running this kernel with R4 ?(my guess is most of us are)
I have had a couple of fs probs that lost some data, after a year of R4 it's suprising.
Just a warning until I get more specifics.
(Not knocking your excellent kernels Darckness) full appologies if it turns out to be something else.
PS LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOG line posters please remember we're not all using 2,048 x 4096 TFT monitors! dont make me scroll back and forth every line of every post just to read it . Thanks. _________________ Linux, because I'd rather own a free OS than steal one that's not worth paying for.

It's all in the name. Kernel patchsets don't like sheinkers. |
I am sorry, I am afraid I dont know what a "sheinker" is.

I have two questions:
1. how can i get nitro4-sources ?
2. what should I do to make "suspend to ram" work ? because when the computer wakes up, I can see the desktop for 1 second, and after that the display goes black( is it something related to nvidia-kernel ?). I have a desktop PC, not a laptop and the specs are: PIII-700/i815e/Geforce4MX440SE/Samsung795MB with kernel2.6.10-r1/xorg681/kde332/pure udev. |

1. download the ebuild
2. mkdir -p /usr/local/portage/sys-kernel/nitro-sources
3. mv the ebuild to /usr/local/portage/sys-kernel/nitro-sources
4. open /etc/portage/package.keywords (if it doesn't exist create it)
5. add "sys-kernel/nitro-sources ~x86" without the quotes and with the appropriate architecture (for me its ~x86")
6. ebuild nitro-sources-2.6.10-r4.ebuild digest
7. emerge nitro-sources
8. cd /usr/src/ and behold your nitro-sources _________________ Easily backup up your system? klick

Good news: apparently nvidia DOES work with the new nitro! That means that nobody here has any reason to stick with this one!!!! Genetic scheduling for all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! _________________ There is no substitute for experience.

Well, 2.6.10-nitro4 is doing the job for me, thanks Darckness for this great patchset and let's hope the new nitro will be even better _________________ Veritas, Aequitas |

Maybe just a coincidence, but after running 2.6.10-nitro4 couple of days without reboots Firefox suddenly didn't save any files and I wondered why, until it occurred that the partition of /home was - for some weird reason - gone to read-only mode and worked again after remount.
At the next boot there was errors in the filesystem (ext3), and it complained about orphaned inode lists.
Not sure is it something you did to kernel or is my not so new harddrive (WDC WD200EB-00BHF0, ATA, 20GB) just planning to die.
Of course it could also be due to some old crash as I previously had some issues with bttv driver and fsck makes only some quick check in boot after crash (or after 20 mounts).
Does your patchset contain any modifications that affect ext3, VIA-chipsets, ide or stuff like that? |

thanks a lot blinkeye
I 'll do menuconfig right now. As you can see I'm a n00b in nitro-sources, so should I take special care about something when making menuconfig ?
I mean what new features are to be noticed or is there a nitro-faq ? |

not really. there are probably new options as usual with new kernels. after you copied over your old .config file i suggest you do a
to see new options and after that a

ok thanks. Even I couldn't find reiser4 options to configure (that's ok though because i don't use reiser4), I am amazed at how make menuconfig guessed 99,99% of all my options. I just added smb and utf8. Great job !!! |

BRAVO on Kernel patch speed...6.2 seconds from power on to KDE start.
I was also wondering if TUX could be included into the Kernel. It is uber fast frontend for Apache... (RED SKAT markets it as being a all by itself in kernel httpd server, but it flops on that).
I tried just adding the patch myself and it causes some serious errors. Although I do think part of the problem is the developer has only made 2.6.10-rc3-A7. So its probably a version conflict I am having....
thanks |

Yeap its just a directory...full of patches and a quickstart readme
But here you go... http://people.redhat.com/mingo/TUX-patches/
Then I can show everyone how to configure this uber frontend for Apache.

I'm sure you Gentoo users have no reason to care about us Suse users, but I really do like these kernel patch sets.
I treid to take a combination of patches that were broken out, and patch in bootsplash, and TIOCGDEV that Suse makes use of, but even though I can get certain combinations of pathces to patch cleanly, I can never get it to compile.
I can use the kernel as it, and I like it, I just wish I could get something like this with bootsplash and TIOCGDEV, both of which I can apply to a vanilla kernel just fine _________________ -Jimbo |

we may be a gentoo community but we are talking about GNU/linux (in this thread actually about linux - the kernel). i don't see why you shouldn't ask question and get as many answers as others - your question about kernel patching just fits right in. i don't know how to help you at the moment - maybe you could give us some more information? _________________ Easily backup up your system? klick

are you going to release a nitro5 for the 2.6.10 kernel or the next version will be out with the new 2.6.11 kernel? i'm stuck with the vanilla kernels, nitro4 is patched with swsusp2-2.1.5.11 but they fixed a critical bug in 2.1.5.13
I'm really looking forward to use this patched kernel, it looked great except for that nifty swsusp2 bug.. |

2.6.11-rc1-nitro1 should be out by Friday and it should be much more reliable than nitro0. _________________ There is no substitute for experience.

Nice, i'll have a look at it how smooth the new nitro1 will run. Actually 2.6.10-nitro4 is running without problems on my system:
Code: | Benson ~ $ uptime
08:37:03 up 9 days, 11:03, 3 users, load average: 1.07, 0.91, 1.30 |
Nice kernel, Darkness - go on!

i'm not waiting for the nitro to become stable (such a patchset will always have an unstable nature, that doesn't mean instability, just lack of testing compared to a vanilla kernel), i'm waiting for the kernel to become stable. 2.6.11 is still a prepatch.. |

hi
Since 2.6.10 I 've had a problem at booting. I realized that the vesafb-tng causes this error msg:
Code: |
*** ?????? a device to stop working. It is probably because the
*** driver failed to call pci_enable_device(). As a temporary
*** workaround, the "pci=routeirq" argument restores the old
*** behavior. if this argument makes the device work again,
*** please email the output of "lspci" to bjorm.*******@hp.com,
*** so i can fix the driver
|
(?=i couldnt read this cos the is very fast and i cant stop the loading, and this message at the top of the screen)
but if I dont build the vesafb-tng the screen goes wrong with fglrx becouse the opengl applications generates lot of strips. Plz help me what can i do to solve this problem. I tried the 2.6.10-nitro* but it wasnt working for me with vesafb-tng. Now I use 2.6.9-nitro4 and its working well.
