I have used Linux for about 5 years starting off on the server side (I *hate* sendmail.cf )
I recently (past couple of years) started using Linux on the desktop. My favourite distribution has always been debian (apt-get rocks ) because of the ease of system maintenance and ability to install new software.
I stumbled across Gentoo from distrowatch.com, downloaded and found it was actually quicker to install then anything I have ever used. As for speed! Well cool.
Not exactly a newbie distro, definately aimed at the technical. But, if you are a bit techie then you get the best of both worlds; packages that build "out of the box" but also the ability to configure to the nth degree (if you so desire).
Keep up the good work. I loved debian because I could type "apt-get install galeon" and it simply worked without any hassle. Now I can go one stage further and type "emerge galeon" and get exactly the same results, only this time optimised for my system.
Spot on.
: D

Well said, and I have to go with Galeon in the poll, it is fast and light, and works _________________ Face it, we are all noobs.
On the box it said it was designed for Win XP or better, so why won't it work with Linux? |

Agreed. Portage was one of the many reasons (-O3 --march=i686 is another), and it does make me feel a bit like an uber-geek |

I finally got the time to install Gentoo.
Absolutely love it! I installed stage3 (didn't want to have my machine unworkable for too long), and had X going the next day. (56k connection downloading packages..)
The portage system is uber... No more dependancy problems... I love it
Congrats to the Gentoo team... |

I have yet to get round to installing gentoo on any of my machines... suse 8.0 and redhat 7.3 are far too easy to install and get working without having to worry about anything technical.
From what i have seen on these forums, I will be slowly migrating to gentoo... |

I agree too!
Gentoo rocks!
The portage system too! And I can have any software customized the way I like!
I only would like to know if there is any way to pre-build a gentoo linux for installing it in 486s... It could take several hours to install gentoo there from stage1 with a bootstrap.
See ya!
