I'd been having trouble getting a dual boot setup with Gentoo and Win2K because I'd never used GRUB before. I tried Debian Woody and it threw up all over me. In a fit of rage I tried the Gentoo install again w/GRUB and damn if it didn't work.
Now what? _________________ Windows = a 32 bit extension to a 16 bit GUI on an 8 bit OS written for a 4 bit architecture by a 2 bit company who can't stand 1 bit of competition. |

Why did you install linux? Just to check it out? Was there something specific you wanted to try?
Most likely you'll want to emerge a windowmanager. You can take a look at gnome.org, kde.org.
Those are the two most often used desktop environments. Many people like fluxbox, windowmaker,
enlightenment and others. Usually they are less burdensome on system resources, and for most
people are very good. After that, you'll probably want to install some apps. |

My post was more of a "dang if it didn't work" post.
I've been using Linux since RH 5.0 on a Packard Hell 486.
I am having a littl trouble gettin X to start. I emerged KDE this afternoon and followed along in the Desktop doc. Still not getting anything other than the ugly "xsession" wm.
I'll keep dinking around with it. I've got xdm selected in rc.conf and the XSESSION variable set for KDE. _________________ Windows = a 32 bit extension to a 16 bit GUI on an 8 bit OS written for a 4 bit architecture by a 2 bit company who can't stand 1 bit of competition. |

what you need to do is put like 'start kde' at the bottom portion of your /etc/X11/xinitrc file. Take away the line that has the old wm opening, and put the KDE lines there. _________________ Face it, we are all noobs.
On the box it said it was designed for Win XP or better, so why won't it work with Linux? |

Yeah, .xinitrc was my next stop. Got X working correctly and Gnome, Galeon, Evolution, Mozilla, and eTerm emerged. I've got to get the scroll wheel working on my optical logitech mouse. I used the section out of the desktop guide. I added "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" to the rodent section of XF86Config. Still no worky. I didn't use IMPS2 because I've got a logitech optical mouse. I think I'll fiddle with that this morning. _________________ Windows = a 32 bit extension to a 16 bit GUI on an 8 bit OS written for a 4 bit architecture by a 2 bit company who can't stand 1 bit of competition. |

IMPS/2 with the ZAxisMapping settings cured the mouse thing.
Sound with my SBLive worked right out of the shoot because I compiled the driver in the kernel.
Need to setup CUPS now. Isn't there a printer config tool in KDE? _________________ Windows = a 32 bit extension to a 16 bit GUI on an 8 bit OS written for a 4 bit architecture by a 2 bit company who can't stand 1 bit of competition. |

Hmm, even if there is one in KDE, I would use CUPS, as it is not too hard, and give you lotsa control, although a 'normal' windows-like printer config would probably be preferred by most... _________________ Face it, we are all noobs.
