Looking for any clarification from hardware gurus...

I am looking to setup a server at the house (running Gentoo of course) and wanted to get a quad-port (tulip-based) network card. The problem is that I can't tuck the server away anywhere without having loads of wires running to the various computers. So what I wanted to do is go wireless.

My question is - Are there any PCI cards that function as wireless access points? Much like the 4 port ethernet card it will allow all N connections to be managed by the server it is plugged into, but without all of the wires everywhere.

Is this possible? Or is there a better option for creating a server / router and tucking it out of the way?

Chris

I don't know about a hardware based one, but yeah you can get a linux compatable wireless card and build an AP. I know it's not what your looking for, but check this AP out: http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/h/352

If you wanted something more hardware and not OS dependant, just grap a linksys wireless AP (not router) and plug it into the router nic with a crossover. It'll handle the wireless access part, then pass the rest right over the ethernet.

it's easy, just buy a wifi card that is supported by linux and put it in master mode.

Install a dhcp server and anything else you want and you are off.

After looking through both helpful responses, I looked into "Master mode" and found this -

Ahh, eternally useful Gentoo Wiki.

Thanks again guys!
