I must be doing something wrong... my nitro powered rig crawls
It is Athlon64 3200+ w/ 1GB RAM + 3 Fujitsu SCSI disks on 29160.
Being somewhat of a speed entusiast :) I wanted to give nitro o shot.
The good news is -- no crashes/surprises on installation;
the bad news: the system works, but is hopelessly slow -- every function:
disk (and bad hdparm too), net, app start.
I went back to gentoo-dev-sources 2.6.10 and the machine started
flying again (so I am happy; pehaps this was the point :) )

But seriously: "something went wrong" (as in the famous
newspaper headline
"Something went wrong in the plane crash, expert says.")

Anybody experienced anything similar?
-------------------------------------------------
On a similar note: I noticed people ridiculing Fedora for slugishness,
is is really that slow, or is it autosuggestion? If it is slow, what is the
cause?

From exp, no. It doesn't seem to be the case with the majority of posters on this thread either.

How did you go about configuring your nitro .config?

Nothing special; stuff I usually do for my gentoo-dev-sources.
No SMP, ext2 + reiserfs (which I use throughout, except on /boot);
I was happy about 1Gig RAM lowmem option, SCSI driver, etc.

(To fully answer I'd have to quote the .config; not sure how to attach...)

I must report the same problem:(
Switching from 2.6.9-nitro4 now everything is sloooow, even the boot of the system..I compiled the kernel the same as usual, I think..
It must be some config option, I'll look at it

Hi,
I love Nitro Sources they are just awesome and have been using the latest 2.6.9 Nitro Kernel, but when I tryed to configure the new 2.6.10 one it seems that there are no options for Reiser4 even though I know the patch is included and there is a folder in /usr/src/linux/fs/reiser4.
I dont know. I tried xconfig Show All Options and then it shows up, but I cant seem to enable it.
Please help as my whole distfiles folder is on a reiser4 partition.
Thank you

under kernel hacking, check and make sure that 4k stacks is not enabled.

Lol, I had it enabled under the old 2.6.9 Nitro Kernel and I was just using that config. O well another day, another thing learned.
Thanks again

Yeah, it's definitely going there. Almost done with the new nitro (damn win4lin is being a whiny little bitch again). This will most likely be the largest nitro I've ever made or seen, and there's probably several hundred patches on it. Haven't booted into it because I'm not quite finished with the ironing, but I think it will be quite spectacular.

Things to look forward to:

alsa-1.0.8_rc1
ck2
ac4
bk7
the "usual" patches
AND
a mystery group of patches

Bonus points to anyone who can guess what the last group actually is before I release it.

Not unless you're running a server or for some other reason desperately need to reduce kernel CPU overhead. Otherwise it'll needlessly slow down system response.

Code:
Linux Gamebox 2.6.10-nitro2 #1 Thu Jan 6 11:33:21 CET 2005 i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.66GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

Thanks!!

edit: OUCH I've got a BIG problem here :( Using the "nv" driver, when I go back to the console from X the computer hangs. I can't even log in with ssh from my laptop :( Besides, if I use the nvidia binary drivers I can't even start X. Anyone knows what kind of problem this is? I'll experiment a bit while I wait for your answer. Thanks.

As a quick-fix, you could try enabling vesafb(-tng) in the kernel, and using the framebuffer X driver (fbdev). I have no idea what's causing X to hang on nv and/or not run on nvidia, tho. One thing to check: Make sure that the nvidia framebuffer is NOT enabled in the kernel (vesafb/vesafb-tng is OK, I use it myself right alongside nvidia). Last I knew, this could cause all sorts of problems.

Hope this helps. :D

New nitro is out. Please use that unless you need win4lin (but I have a feeling that nitro3's win4lin will be fixed soon anyway ).

I'll try the new nitro asap. I knew about framebuffers and the fact that the nvidia framebuffer tends to create problems so I tried disabling framebuffer entirely (I was already using vesafb-tng) or using vesafb but it simply seems this kernel won't work. I experienced the same problem long ago when vesafb-tng first came out. Disabling it, though, didn't get me anywhere, not then, not now. Since the other 2.6.10 based kernel I'm using works fine the problem's probably in one of the patches but as things are now I can't make any kind of bug search (nothing in the logs etc, I'm sure you know the story). Thanks anyway.

samonli:

You may want to post that in the correct thread (this is for 2.6.10-nitro2, you are using 2.6.10-nitro3).

Also, when you go to the new nitro thread you will see that win4lin is broken (for whatever reason, you will have speak to Darkness about that).

HTH

well someone should clue him in. I dont run Wine or Cedega nor do I renice X. Every kernel I've used that has all his stuff in breaks my sound in OpenAL games.

Something like this perhaps? Seems openAL uses OSS by default.

Following on from my last post, which doesn't seem to have generated any feedback, i can now report that i've got a system running satisfactorily on a reiser4 root (/) partition.

Unfortunately, i did it by patching a gentoo-dev-sources kernel with the relevant patch from the namesys website.

I'd still like to get this nitro-kernel up & running, so the new question is:- Do i have to build the entire system with
Code:
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86"
...in order to avoid any package-incompatibilities?

If you want a stable system, don't emerge your system with ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86, it'll mostly brake your system! Besides that, don't use that ACCEPT_KEYWORDS again, it's depreciated! Make a file called package.keywords in your /etc/portage/, and add packages (e.g.sys-kernel/gentoo-dev-sources ~x86 to unmask a package).

And what has your kernel to do with emerging the rest of the system? I don't see your problem. The kernel is a thing for itself, that's actually what you really can call Linux, and the other things are "Bonus"-Software - possibly they have some dependancies, but portage solves it for you!

As the earlier post that i linked to states, when i build a nitro2-kernel, udev (stable-release) no longer plays nice.

What with the patched dev-sources kernel working with udev as it ought to, i was trying to seek your collective insight into how to get nitro2 to work with the "bonus software" i build around it.

I'm unsure about portage handling the dependancies, as nitro-sources aren't part of the official tree. Any rule-of-thumb would be greatly appreciated, as this kernel sounds well worth the effort!

Did you use udev before? Do you have sys-fs/udev emerged? Maybe you get some advices in the Documentation, Tipps & Tricks-Forum?!

Sorry, can't help at the moment further, since i don't use udev. As i'm very interessted in it, i may have a look at this udev thing later, maintainly because i want to give ivman a try...

My initial installation was based on this 2.6 migration guide. Having had no end of fun with devfsd in the past, i absolutely love udev to bits. Everything just works!

If my last post sounded overly frustrated, it's because i've got 2 kernels that i can run in my reiser4 partition, 1 a patched 2.6.9-dev-sources that works just as the non-reiser4 one did. The other, a 2.6.10-nitro2, under which the same udev ceases to function as expected.

I'm assuming i've got an incompatibility issue, & am hoping to gain some insight from those on this thread who've got a happily-running system under nitro2.

For what it's worth, the installed version of udev is 045, but as i said earlier, some sort of guideline applicable to all packages would be my ideal... :D
