sometimes when i run ed2k-gui (edonkey 2000) and then i try to update my world or compile something else, my computer freezes ...don't know why
...some help would be really apriciated, because 1. it's REALLY anoying 2. it reminds me of winblows 3. my younger brother started to make fun of linux again, because of that (the most importaint is no 1!) _________________ tea+free software+law=hook

I guess you are using the gentoo-sources , i had the same problem you need to enable the preempt feature in the kernel( under the cpu stuff) then it hopefuly won´t crash anymore. |

Is DMA on for your disk(s)? What IDE controller or motherboard model are you using. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

Maybe you should try to making a new kernel vanilla/gentoo and see what happends
If the problem remains then it could be some hardware problem. |

motherboard: asus a7v (via apollo kt133 ultraDMA/100)
DMA as kernel support: in IDE/ATAPI... i have enabled "Use PCI DMA by default when available", but disabled "Boot off-board chipsets first support" "Force enable legacy 2.0.X HOSTS to use DMA" and "Enable DMA only for disks" _________________ tea+free software+law=hook

What does "hdparm -i" say about the disk? Are there any kernel log messages that might help, like IDE resets or something? _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

I have same motherboard.
Had maxtor ata/100 drive failure.
(had a lot of disk io resets etc. in logs)
The BIOS does not smart-monitor drives
on promise ata/100 ide controller
only on via... ata/66 ide controller.
To check plug maxtor in via controller
or emerge app-admin/ide-smart.
It caught(on mdk) my maxtor drive failure.
My $0.02.

ed2kgui uses gtk. Are all your gnome apps and other gtk apps stable ? |

Since your probs do not seem to surface until you put your machine under heavy load (running resource-hog ed2kgui and emerge for example), I would definitely look to faulty ram first as aptly described earlier in this thread. I don't think that your probs are kernel-related since your use vanilla sources and your probs appear only during high load, this is the classical case for memory probs. Memtest is your freind, and you can also run stress, which does a pretty good job to put an insane amount of load on any machine, if there are any probs whatsoever they will surface very quickly during such a torture test phase.
$ emerge stress
$ stress -c 24
Then sit back and see what happens over a period of a few hours...
PS: You should also make sure that your ram sticks are compatible and supported by your motherboard.

my ram is ok ...had it checked when i bought it (a few months ago) ..the sticks should be ok ...becuase i still heave the guarantee seal on the machine ...i don't like that ...but it's there
i think i need to add, that during 6 months of my owning the computer, i had to exchange 6 disks, 2 cdroms and 3 modems ...due to a motherboard problem (probably IDE controler was foobar) ...when i kicked the living rap out of the service-guy, i got a new motherboard, cpu cooler and the power supply unit
...what exactly does stress do?!? ...i mean ...does it try to break the machine, or does it just simulate that? _________________ tea+free software+law=hook

It forks multiple, cpu-intensive calculations which put a lot of stress on the cpu since they run in parallel. It will not break your machine, just stress your cpu. |

Before you run stress I would try memtest86 first. |

RAM is bad then. Try to replace the stick affected. |

Actually memetest should tell you on which bank the affected stick resides. If in doubt, you can simply take one stick out, run memtest on the single stick and see which one is affected. |
