emerge vim fails - ACCESS VIOLATION

Brand new to Gentoo on Sparc. Installed on an ancient Netra T1. After rebooting, I'm trying to "emerge --usepkg vim" with the following result:

The log file has just that one line in it. I was able to successfully emerge vi (without the m). Is this happening because of the sandbox?

What happens if you do:

FEATURES="-sandbox" emerge vim ???
