Im setting up a scool linux system. Gaming in scool time is not a option. So i must block some sites on some others not. Problem is Runescape. How to block it so, that there is no way to play this. It has multiple servers and multiple access points to them. And in some win machines is downloaded client. Therewere, after scool time is gaming allowed, it is a easy way to automate this? |

If you know the admin passwords to the machines (assuming they're w2k or better) or have a domain admin account, you can use smbclient to the C$ share, and delete the files. Or even better, just remove the files from the home directories when the user isn't logged in.
Oh, and if you're feeling lucky, try plaing around with rpcclient.
I don't know if the machines have to be a member of your domain though, (assuming you have one).
But really, problems like this are more an issue for the school staff, and less for the network admin.
If you want to deny access to the site, if you have control of a DNS server, you can set the runescape.com NS to 127.0.0.1.
Another option is a filtering proxy server, but those tend to be tricky to set up and cause other complexities.
But aside from cute proxy and DNS tricks, there's not much else you can do beside asking the staff to do their job and watch the children.
Of course, you could always lock accounts and give lectures. _________________ "Please be aware, that while this message is being broadcast today, you may recive it tommorow, possibly yesterday." |

I am admim, and i have all privileges.
If i remove runescape client program from win machines, then some download it from somewhere else or has it in the floppy drive. Its not very effective.
I have every machine a configured hosts file where runescape.com is assigned to scool web page.
example in /etc/hosts or C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc
www.runescape.com 127.0.0.1
It is not working. Above is one way, another is proxy(yes, they use this) or more simpler IP link from a public server. I can block all traffic from certain IP adresses, but there are so many servers over the world. Live-cd-s are not problem, they cannot cahne boot device.
All traffic goes trough a gentoo server, maybe this helps |

Generally I'd say that, unless the game is damaging your system, you're probably best off deleting it when/where it shows up and showing a degree of due diligence to remove/prevent it.
You're never going to completely block them from doing it, and about the only way to prevent them from doing it from your end, and short of notifying the administration when you detect someone installing it to put the fear of god into them(which is very uncool), your role in supervising what the students are doing is pretty minimal.
Most school labs I've seen have someone watching the pc's at all times someone is in there even if just to make sure no one walks off with them. Preventing students from mucking about is really their job. |
