|
|
I'm a veteran of several Gentoo Linux installs on various architectures and so when I was given a sparc32, my initial instinct was "Great! I'll put Gentoo on it."
Except I found that the last sparc32 livecd created was back in the Bad Old Days of Gentoo Linux 1.4.
Moreover, it has only the stage1 & stage3 tarballs and both of them run into serious problems while emerging things.
I've just succeeded in fouling up yet another install. python now generates the error "illegal instruction". /proc/cpuinfo tells me that I have a Fujitsu MB86904 which seems to correspond with -mcpu=sparclite and -mtune=sparclite.
I'm starting another try from stage3 which I'll better document, but why was the port dropped? _________________ littlegreenmen.armory.com is a free shell account and anonymous game server. telnet/ssh in as user "request" to get an account. |

I just noticed a note about an experimental livecd. I'll try that and get back to this. _________________ littlegreenmen.armory.com is a free shell account and anonymous game server. telnet/ssh in as user "request" to get an account. |

Moved from Installing Gentoo to Gentoo on Sparc, you'll probably get more help here. _________________ Search | Read | Answer | Report | Strip |

The last install I did on a Sparc32 was a SparcStation 20 - I used the 2004.1 (I think) cd...
I would suggest finding one of those CD's, do a stange 3 install and install a minimum system from that - then update portege and re-link the system as a 2005.1 - finally emerge --deep --newuse world
ok so its going to take AGES but it will get up a nice up to date system on Sparc 32 _________________ Toady
