Hi all,

Problem using tightvnc trying to connect with vncviewer from my Gentoo on x86 to Gentoo on Sparc (running Xvnc).

vncviewer (on x86) launches OK, and screen output on both sides seems to indicate connects OK, but never shows the Sparc desktop, all I get is a pattern of pixels, sort of like alternate black-gray pixels. Even if I use F8 to get the vnc popup and send a refresh, nothing happens.

Dont really know if this is a specific Gentoo on Sparc related thing. But I CAN connect OK from the Sparc to the x86!

More info:
- I've checked (as far as I can understand) the screen output, and the only differences I can see between the remote machine (Sparc) and the local client (x86) is that the Sparc runs as "Most significant byte first in each pixel" and the vncviewer client is "Least significant byte first in each pixel". Is this relevant? I know the hardware is different, but does this affect tightvnc's ability to display anything? All other settings seem to be in sync, like compression, color and color shift, cursor settings etc.

- I run Xvnc on the Sparc (command line: Xvnc -depth 16 -geometry 800x600 -nevershared). I've tried all sorts of combinations of depth and geometry on the Sparc and the x86, but always the same result. I dont run vncserver on the Sparc because vncserver never stays up, always crashes after a few seconds. I havent been able to understand why.

- Both Gentoo's have the same version of tightvnc (1.2.9-r1),
Sparc's uname -a:
Linux sparc 2.4.25-sparc-r1 #2 SMP Sat Jul 3 10:44:37 PDT 2004 sparc64 sun4u TI UltraSparc IIi (Sabre) GNU/Linux
x86's uname -a:
Linux main 2.4.22-02 #4 Sat Jun 12 15:52:15 PDT 2004 i686 Pentium III (Coppermine) GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

Any advice?

Thanks,
joespr

The problem is that the Sparc architecture is "big-endian" and the x86 is "little-endian".

I presume it`s an endianess problem. There should be a patch somewhere for VNC to correct this (search google).
