ペンギン = Pe N Gi N = Penguin

冬鳥 - winter bird

You just copy, paste, and size them up... Depending on the editor(s) used.

Though sometimes they are used as furigana...

Hah! :lol:

Sorry ... but are you confusing furigana with gairaigo? Furigana are the kana characters sometimes used over or next to kanji to help people unfamiliar with a given kanji read.

'Gairaigo' is a word adopted from another language into Japanese.... i.e.
アイスクリーム (aisukuriimu) Ice Cream
パソコン (pasokon... short for paasonaru konpuuta) Personal Computer
テレビ (terebi) Television
ラジオ (rajio) radio ...

You get the idea.

Basically, there is no kanji (character/ideogram) for penguin in Japanese.
"ペンギン" is a phonetic approximation of the word penguin in English using katakana, which in layman terms means it is not as cool as we'd like it to be.
