I'm trying to figure out if you could use a laptops touchpad as some sort of tablet for writting and drawing? All I know is that none of my pens, and styluses work... I can't figure out how the hell the touchpad works... I mean I try my finger, and it moves the mouse; I try a stylus and nothing happens... So it must be something soft... so I try an eraser... nothing happens... What gives?

There are several variations on the design of a touchpad, but the basic principle in all of them is the same. The touchpad has two layers of material. One layer responds to vertical movement while the other responds to horizontal movement. Different designs use wire-sensor grids, semi-conductive gel, electrodes or even tiny springs. In all cases, the pad tracks the movement of a finger and translates it to the movement of the mouse. Some models respond to tapping to simulate clicking the mouse button or allow people to scroll through documents by moving their finger along one vertical edge.

So are there any stylus'es that would work with them?

That's an intersting Idea, never thought about it. When will we see a cool "touchpad" app, or does it already exist?

I know something like this 'has' to exist. Hell most touchpads support a resolution of 400dpi, so it's good enough for some basic input.

Yeah using it as a tablet for writting and drawing would be really cool...

Stupid thing is, they have one of those touchpads in the laundry room over here plus a regular monitor, attached to the wall, instead of a touch screen, that one have to use in order to book a washing machine. Oh the best part, it's running windoze and some weird visual basic app so it crashes all the f# time and is usually down. This is not funny because it controls the damn electronic locks on the doors down there. Yeah first they used the tapping function on the touchpad so it lasted for about a week. The next builing has a totally different system, using a led gui and some buttons. I wouldn't be surprised if it's running something unix-based. But I have no access there.
