I tried emerging things and they failed so I read that I should upgrade my kernel source and kernel. I downloaded and used genkernel to build the new kernel. It boots up fine but before I could see the 'boot screen' where everything is starting but now it's all blury and messed up. I'm thinking it has something to do with the resolution since it's widescreen 1280x800 and I know I had to disable something in the old kernel to get it to work but I thought the new release would have used the same configuration...no?

Not unless you copied .config from /usr/src/oldkerneldirectory into /usr/src/newkerneldirectory
