Hello to the forum!
first of all excuse me for my poor english...
I've go a problem trying to boot livecd on my system, which is a Pentium IV CPU with a Tekram DC-390U3W SCSI 160 controller.
When I start from the CD, everything goes well until it comes to the SCSI module load. When this module starts, it tries (i think) to detect which hardware is connected on every channel on the board, but after some messages telling about BUS, HOST and BOARD reset, I've got a kernel panic.
I've had the same problem installing RH, but in that case I solved the problem switching off autodetection, then loading by myself the related module, and after that I was able to install the OS.
Is it possible to disable autodetection of some modules also on the livecd to avoid this hang?
Thank you very much |

Thank you people for your reply!
By further investigating the 1.4 livecd bootprocess, I've discovered that the kernel module that is causing the crash is sym53c416, which isn't the correct module for my scsiboard (it uses sym53c8xx instead).
Because I guess that module is compiled in the kernel, so it is initialized before the init process starts, is there a way to tell the kernel to skip it, typing something at the boot prompt?
I've tried also 1.2, that works (I have to load the scsi driver using modprobe, so I choose the correct one .
But it seems that 1.2 has no rpppoe to start my DSL line. Bad luck? |

It's me again, sorry
I was finally able to do the installation of the 1.4_pre version of Gentoo.
I simply installed RedHat and after booting, I did the installation of Gentoo.
Everything ok, but now, after compiling the kernel and booting it, system hangs during SCSI bootstrap.
But this time it hangs after detecting the first disk (I have two installed).
Obviously I don't think is the hardware, because RH is working. I've tried bot versions of sym53c8xx driver.
I'm at a dead point, just because I'm not able to identify the problem as mine or maybe a combination of gcc-kernel option which is ruining the code? |
