Hello!

I have a Sun Ultra5 that has ben running Gentoo for a while now. The machine has a typical (old) fixed frequency Sun monitor (gdm-1962b). The framebuffer is based on the Ati mach64 chip. Before Gentoo I used another distribution under which I could use X by using the output of "fbset -x" as video modes (unfortunately I lost the XF86Config-4 file).

Hm nope, forget it. This monitor needs all timings etc accurately specified (that is what fixed-frequency means), generic settings and ranges don't work.

I solved this problem: the clue is, X uses a built-in horizontal and vertical refresh range if you don't specify them. Then, if the modelines and the refresh rates are incompatible, it discards the mode.

So the trick is to add a horizsync and vertrefresh that X likes (google the monitor's product id + manual for that).
