|
|
Hey, I've been using gentoo for quite some time now, but I've always used a hardware firewall. I've been looking into iptables but it seems really complicated and all I really want to do has have all ports blocked out but certain ones I want open to the outside. I've always used the netgear web-interface to forward ports and such; is there anything similar for iptables? Again, all I really need to do is have certain ports available to 'the outside world'.
Also, how will I be able to log into my SBC account through this box (the hardware firewall did this for me)?
Thanks in advance,
William |

Just came across this.. not web interface but gtk gui for iptables, and in portage.
http://gtk-iptables.sourceforge.net/links.html
You also may want to look into shorewall, it's easier to manage than iptables (though I prefer straight up iptables now). I believe there is a webmin module which would give you web access to manage your firewall. Both webmin and shorewall are in portage. You may need to google to pickup the webmin module piece to tie them together.
Hope this helps

Hi !
Iptables is not so complicated, you should see some samples.
If you want a GUI, you should have a look to :
http://kmyfirewall.sourceforge.net/
http://www.simonzone.com/software/guarddog/
http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=14791
If you want to try theses gui, the "Firewall Builder" is I think the first to try...
Personally, I no more use iptables because I use complex configurations that would make an iptables script difficult to maintain... So I use shorewall. This is not a gui, this is based on multiple text files that you can edit.
Shorewall is to my eyes the most powerful firewall configuration tool. |

Thanks, I'm looking into shorewall right now..
As for GUIs I can't really use one as my server doesn't have x installed and I'd rather access it remotely.
Also, should I be using PPPoE to log into my sbc account for dsl? |

Unless you have a static IP, SBC does PPPoE. I believe they do PPPoA now. Either way, you'll probably need to authenticate with your ISP before getting an IP.
Answer to your question: most likely yes. |
