Hi,
I'm currently installing a 64bit Gentoo on my Acer 1501Lmi and got the following message:
Quote: | Your BIOS seems to not contain a fix for K8 errata #93 |
I got the latest bios
Does anybody know what that message means? I couldn't find any usefull information about that errata #93 on the web and I don't know what to say when I call Acer..
thx _________________ Jens

Jtb,
This AMD document
http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/white_papers_and_tech_docs/25759.pdf
may help. See page 44. Essentailly, the CPU has a design fault that can be worked around in the BIOS.
Refer Acer to this document. _________________ Regards,

Answer from the Acer-Telephonesupport: "do you think we will make a new bios for one person"!?
This will cause an angry email to the support... _________________ Jens

Jtb,
That tech support person is incompetent. They are really saying that all the equipment they make with that CPU and BIOS is defective, they know it, and don't care.
It reminds me of Intels original approach to the P1 FPU division bug.
I'll not be buying Acer now. _________________ Regards,

EMail-Answer from the support:
Quote: |
wir supporten Linux selber nicht. Wenn es durch das Bios unter unserem ausgelieferten Windows ein Problem gibt, beschreiben Sie uns bitte den Fehler. |
Translated:
we don't support Linux yourself. If the BIOS causes problems with the shipped Windows (WinXP Home) please describe the error to us

/me adds Acer to his fecal like list
I'm not surprised. About 10 years ago when I was a PC motherboard designer, we used to evaluate lowend motherboards that was too expensive for us to design ourselves. I remember a few Acer motherboards, we found hardware errors in them and fed it back to Acer who replied something like "but Windows works".
Needless to say, we ditched Acer as OEM supplier. |
