I have tried for so long to rip DVDs correctly. Back when I ran windows, I tried to use one of those all in one programs similar to DVDrip. And a number of DVDripping/encoding suites -- but I always ran into one problem. The audio was always off a little bit.
Enter Gentoo. I thought my problems would be over, but here again my problem surfaces with DVDrip.
My question is: is there always an audio displacement that has to be dealt with manually? Or have I been doing something wrong? |

If you are talking of a slight shift of 120--200 ms, yes it happens
It can be corrected afterward with avidemux |

I had A/V sync. problems only once, when I ripped/encoded the Star Wars I DVD. All other DVDs (> 20) where "in sync".
"avisync" (part of the transcode package) is your friend |

Can anyone point me to a good how-to on dvd ripping? I'd like something that covers different software and methods, if possible, as well as something along the lines of a quickstart guide.
Thx,

HTH, each guide is going to be different based on the software you're using. i've never gotten dvdrip to work for me yet and did all my dvd archiving mostly under windows (except for using vcdimager on the mpg file). you basically rip the vob's off the dvd, then you encode them using one of many encoders. i prefer vcd format (mpeg-2?), but others really like this divx stuff. |
