Install Locks up after emerge system

My install will lock up during the "emerge system" at the line
"checking if --enable-ipv6 is specified..."
i'm using the default use flags from the /etc/make.profile/make.defaults file and my make.conf use is blank. my chost is "i686-pc-linux-gnu" and my cflags is "-mcpu=i686 -03 -pipe".
The computer is a 900 mhz AMD duron. do i have one of these settings wrong?
