hi folks
I'm not a gntoo-guru, but I know that:
if I want a eth1 I have to copy the script in the init.d and name it net.eth1, if I want vlan I have to copy.... that's crap, specially if emerge only updates the eth0 script.
there might be the need to make NIC-classes, say "if I get wireless or wired network everything is ok" and "if I'm in the office, make vlan optional"
or in a more structured manner
required {
class "main connection" { eth0, wlan0 }
}
optional {
class "my home vlan" {vlan0 }
}
also just make /etc/ini.d/net and call it according the net.conf settings
it'ss just some thoughts I wanted to share....
there might also be the need of "execute this command if interface is up" or like this net.conf
eth1
mode=dhcp
command="dyndns.sh"
there might also be the need to execute commands before the interface is brought up or after... something like "pre_up-command" and "post_up-command"
people who know debian maybe know some of this... but it's generally IMHO.
I know, I adds lot of possibilities, it's more complex and need's a lot of shell-code.
please take it as a "wish" I have, and my thoughts as an input and don't fell bad about me.
regards
