When portage attempts to download a new package for emerge it often attempts to download the package from 1.0.0.0 instead of the actuall ip address of the specified server. However, if I ping the default download site before emerging it downloads it just fine from the specified site. I do not see this problem in other networking applications so I assume it is a portage specific problem dealing with DNS resolution. Do any of you have any ideas on how to fix this annoying but not critical problem.

thanks.

Well, yes - what does your resolv.conf contain ?
And are the nameservers sane ?
Maybe it's a resolver library issue ?

It doesn't matter. The same thing results regardless of the mirror it is attempting to download from.

The resolv.conf contains the dns servers and the name servers seem to be sane. In any case, I would expect that these problems would appear in other applications if there was a problem in any of those areas. Thats what leads me to believe its a portage issue, though, I have no clue as to what it might be.

Did you add the mirrors yourself, or did you use mirrorselect ?

Maybe mirrorselect screwed up, this does happen quite often.
