I have been working on a gentoo install at college and left the system emerging xorg on tuesday.. i'm fairlly sure xorg finished compiling so i dont think that has anything to do with the problems. What i do think is that some other student has messed about with things and deleted various files etc.. who knows why??? but anyway here are the problems in order :p

Whilst Booting 1:

Code:

 * Caching service dependencies...                           [ OK ]
 * Setting system clock to hardware clock [UTC]...           [ OK ]
FATAL: Failed to open config file /etc/modprobe.devfs: No such file or directory
FATAL: Failed to open config file /etc/modprobe.devfs: No such file or directory
FATAL: Failed to open config file /etc/modprobe.devfs: No such file or directory
FATAL: Failed to open config file /etc/modprobe.devfs: No such file or directory
 * Configuring kernel parameters...                          [ OK ]
 * Updating environment...                                   [ OK ]

Whilst Booting 2:

Code:

 * Initializing random number generator...                   [ OK ]
INIT: Entering runlevel: 3
 * WARNING: /etc/init.d/syslog-ng missing: skipping
 * WARNING: /etc/init.d/vixie-cron missing: skipping
 * Brining eth0 up (192.168.0.2)...                          [ OK ]

The above problem will be fixed if i could re-emerge the packages, but i am unable to use emerge :(

Whilst Loging On:

Code:

gentoo login: root
PAM-security[4520]: Couldn't open /etc/security
Password:
login[4520]: cannot open login definitions /etc/login.defs [No such file or directory]
login[4520]: PAM pam_putenv: delete non-existent entry: REMOTEHOST
PAM-env[4520]: Unknown PAM_ITEM: <XAUTHORITY>
login[4520]: PAM pam_putenv: delete non-existent entry: XAUTHORITY
login(pam_unix)[4520]: session opened for user root by (uid=0)
login[4520]: cannot open login definitions /etc/login.defs [No such file or directory]
login[4520]: cannot open login definitions /etc/login.defs [No such file or directory]
Last Login: Thu Nov 25 09:44:37 on vc/1

login[4520]: cannot open login definitions /etc/login.defs [No such file or directory]
login[4520]: cannot open login definitions /etc/login.defs [No such file or directory]
login[4520]: cannot open login definitions /etc/login.defs [No such file or directory]
 -- root[4520]: cannot open login definitions /etc/login.defs [No such file or directory]
gentoo root # _

Whislt Trying to emerge:

Code:

gentoo / # emerge syslog-ng

/usr/bin/python: relocation error: /lib/libpthread.so.0: symbol __libc_fork, version GLIBC_2.1.2 not defined in file libc.so.6 with link time reference
gentoo / # _

When i try to 'env-update' i get the same error as above..

I'm open to any ideas.. i think if i'm able to fix the emerge problem then the others would be easier to fix.. Thanks in advance for any ideas given..

You missed something in the install, as far as what I have no idea.
