hi folks..

after a previous thread were i claimed about my non-working gcc ("a working c++ compiler is needed") i decided to re-format my partitions and start from the beginning with a new clean system, with empty paritions..

so i downloaded the livecd 1.4_rc1 (the freshest; stage1) and played troughe the normal install doc..
all went very good, the bootstrapping was good, the gcc built.. i thought that all was done and to finish i emerged the system (after an emerge sync..)

i didn't look at the screen, drinking coke and relaxing, got back to the box and looked at the screen "oh, finished.. great.."
issued a 'mount', and what did i see??
Code:
/usr/bin/mount: No such file or directory

even emerge is dead, as /usr/bin/env is not available.. ! also rm, cp, all is away!
as mentioned, i didn't see where exactly emerge removed all those bins, but it has to be when it auto-cleaned the "old" packages..
but how is this possible...........????

it happened to me several times when i tried to mix gentoo1.2 with 1.4 bins, that wasn't a surprise..
but this time i used the livecd1.4_rc1 stage1 bz2, so i think this shouldn't happen!

once again, portage killed my system...
please help my out there.. i was so a happy gentoo user with 1.2..!

could you please be more precise. it looks like you are doing some assumptions about what was happening.
please give more useful information.
as you havent rebooted your machine you should be able to do some system checks from the boot cd.

what kind of information would be useful?

i'm quite sure that emerge did it.. what i've seen:
- bootstrapped.. went fine..
- emerge system.. i saw gcc compile perfectly, groff, glibc went good..

after that i changed the screen and thought all came good.. the only place where emerge could remove it is the auto-cleaning old packages.. i saw it some times before when the same problem happened..
but this time it did it on a fresh install..

no, i haven't rebooted.. and what "system checks"? what should i check, i see the failure, all important bin's are away.. if i exit from the chroot console, i can't re-login as /bin/bash doesn't exist..
