I have bought a Tevion Multicard reader. If I plug it into the USB port with a Compact Flash card in it, fine. I've set it up in Udev and Fstab, no problem. However, if I plug it in without a card in it, it prevents all other USB storage cards from working!

Once I unplug it all seems OK, but then when I shutdown, it crashes out and closes down early, without properly unmounting the Hard Drives, leading to a long fsuk on reboot.

The obvious solution is never to plug it in with a card not already in it, however, is there something I can do so that this is not a problem?

this is IMHO bad behaviour, so you should fill a bug report in bugzilla.kernel.org or contact maintainer of your card reader's driver.

No special driver, I assume it's just the usbstorage module.
