make sure you have in /etc/rc.conf
Code: | # What display manager do you use ? [ xdm | gdm | kdm ]
DISPLAYMANAGER=kdm |
then do a
Code: | rc-update add xdm default |
to have it come up at boot.

Well I don't use KDE so I can't be too helpful here but I'll try to point you to some things I have seen. Check out the Gentoo Desktop Guide which indicates you need to edit your /etc/rc.conf file and specify kdm. Check it out and let us know if this works better for you, and if it loads the PS1 environment variable properly (not that I know what that is, because I don't).
