USB mass storage SCSI error help

I have this cool little USB key chain disk (nexdisk 32mb)... but i'm havin' a hell-of-a-time getting it to work on my gentoo box. :c(

Here's what i can tell ya:

The device mounts and works fine on the following systems:
    redhat 8 machine
    mac os X and 9.x
    winblows 98

My internal zip disk works fine on /dev/sda
My CD-RW works fine too.

If the device is formatted with nexdisk win98 utility the partition table is a mess and fdisk reports errors

So i re-format with:
fdisk (i've tried many different layouts/types)
Mac OSX disk utility (as msdos)
    winblows "right click format"

neither maks a diff.

My machine specs:
    Mobo: Gigabyte GA-7IXEH - VIA KT133
    current kernel gentoo 2.4.19-r10
    i've tried redhat kernel 2.4.19-r4

Some kernel stuff:
    support for USB
    prelim USB device file system
UHCI (intel PIIx4, VIA) support (i've tried OHCI and the other UHCI)
    USB Mass Storage
    USB HID stuff
    SCSI support
    SCSI generic support
    Probe all LUNs
    Verbose SCSI error reporting
    etc.

I've prayed to google and google-groups... with no luck. I get the feeling i'm overlooking the obvious... so any help at all will be great!

Thanks!
