I've noticed that a lot of people say they just use emerge -u world, without checking deps with -D. However I just checked the -u and it's nice and small... Maybe -u updates once every day or two and -uD updates bi-monthly or something?

What do you do.

I always use the --deep flag. I think that the only time it is dangerous to use it is if you are running an ~x86 system because whilst a certain package might not work correctly if you chose to merge the masked version of it, doing an "emerge -uD world" with ~x86 in your make.conf could potentially have very negative effects on your system. So it really all depends on what sort of system you want to run.

-uD for me.

The only time I had a problem was when I had a ~x86 system. But with package.keywords I don't need that anymore.

I use -pvuD to check what apps have updates available, and then cherry pick the ones I want and emerge them seperately. Occasionally if the list gets really long I'll let the full -uD run overnight, but so far this has happened exactly once (been using it for ~6 months).

Same as everyone I guess ... running a full ~x86 system for more than a year using emerge -uDav world. Once in a while emerge -av depclean and revdep-rebuild. Never had major troubles to speak I maintain my system up to date nearly everyday. Troubles were incurred due to testing leading edge software and ebuilds ... easily resolved by checking bugs.gentoo.org.

I haven't done a system wide update on my comp yet because I only started using Gentoo in June and I kept putting off updating until this week. I did emerge -uD --newuse system (because I changed my USE flags quite a bit) the other day with no problems, and I'm doing emerge -uD --newuse world as we speak (169 to go!). I've been ~x86 from the start so we'll see what happens I guess.

After this I'll update more often (like once a week).

no he doesn't, it just doesn't do any special checking, it just emerges the files in his world file that have never verions in portage.

Just wondering: does it patch all security flaws as well? Because when I read some of the bugtraq entries at Gentoo, it sometimes suggests other arguments with the emerge command.

The 'other arguments' suggested in GLSAs are just to prevent the package from being put into the worldfile if it wasn't already there. If you want to get all the security updates, then the only way to do it is either (1) always use emerge -uD world, and make sure that your world file is in sync with your installed packages (emerge -pv depclean can help you with that), (2) watch for GLSAs and update the affected packages manually, or (3) use glsa-check, which is still slightly experimental.

-uDp world | genlop --pretend to check the time it should take, and then disregarding however long it may take -uD world, i run some packages ~x86, but only when the masked version has some important changes.

Your monthly step has useless options in there. e means its going to recompile your entire system, the D and u are not needed in this case. An emerge -e world will do the identical thing. I cant believe you recompile your system monthly, thats extremely drastic...

I do it while I sleep. No sweat. I mean, it's not like I'm wasting my time...

I only do it while I sleep...

Anyway, I add all kinds of things in and it helps to clean things up, methinks. :D

And with the system in my signature, it doesn't take long at all. Whoever said using linux on older comps was better is an idiot!!! 8O
